Relay to the plate causes a bang-bang play at the plate, which U1 (who has excecuted his part of a perfect rotation), is straightlined on the tag, bangs out. It was close and could have gone either way, but in his position, it was the best call possible.

The announcers go into how the plate ump was "out of position all the way by 3rd" and that "the 1st base umpire had to make a tough call out of position."

I was watching that game and wondering why it was on natl TV. Guess now I know.

Earlier in the game the batter unsuccessfully tried to check his swing. The PU pointed and banged the strike. The batter asked for an appeal to first. Then the announcer said something equally stupid.
