Ump_Scott, in your sitch I'd probably do nothing in both cases as the missed tag and the second tag would likely be part of the same sequence. The more likely application of the safe then out is going to be a force where someone drastically overruns the base so it is two distinct plays (maybe a force out). In that case, it's safe (he beat the throw or no tag), then an out when the tag is applied at a later time. If you are making two signals on slide plays, it's going to be virtually one right after the other and it will look like you didn't see it and were changing your call.

As an aside, I think what you are missing here is that on any base other than home, someone who is not on the base is liable to be put out regardless of you already calling them safe (overrunning first being the exception). Anyone that doesn't apply a tag to a runner off a base because you already called safe has no legitimate claim to confusion or misunderstanding. We can't be expected to fix stupid.

As I run it over in my mind it is very unlikely that a coach would have a beef. I'm probably thinking of a situation where the runner never reached the bag but the tag was missed out in front of the bag. But you are right that the timing should allow me to make it all as one call.
