Pretty much you need to hustle and stand out. I had some pretty tough games to do, and I got nothing but great reviews. I was the "number 2" umpire in the whole camp by rankings. Working first base in the championship is where the number 2 guy works.

At the end of the week your crew chief rates your performance and I received a 9.5 out of 10. Being 18, it was pretty tough for the older guys to swallow, which caused a large amount of jealousy throughout the camp.

Nate

Week 12. 2010 Nate and others attending!

Jesse Estrada is running the show up there as far as umpires go this year.

Domonic Machado is assisting him this year as well.

"IF" your CC [crew chief] gave you an overall 9.5....you should be in the pros RIGHT NOW.

I'm not slammin`....I'm speaking 10 CDP [Cooperstown Dreams Park] years of experience.

My CDP trips; 4 Finals on Thurs night....5 Semi's...2 of which were played during the closing ceremony....ah, CDP weather, totally unpredictable!

My core guys would be just as happy to do an 830 or 1200 game on Thurs, then sit on the hill with Chinese food or maybe some ribs from DiMaggio’s across the street and watch the Thurs night Champ game.....honestly!

Jesse will tell his CC's and anyone who will listen....that by his criteria....NOBODY should be getting over a freaking SEVEN.

Jesse scoots the golf cart all over the complex and watches an inning or two of games Sun-Mon-Tues and Wed AM....and he will jump on a game on ANY FIELD HE WANTS TO.....he does ask the CC for their blessing however.

I normally attend week 4....formerly week 3.....formerly week 2 over the years....just because my EXTENDED CDP family attends that week.

I also attended last week....# 10 because I promised a 9 YO team 3 years ago I'd go with them....and the little SOB's remembered, so I kept my 3 year old promise to them.

I worked 1B last Thurs night, Fri morn, week 10, 2010.

I don't consider myself the # 2 ranked umpire overall for the week either.

We had some week arsss crap umpires.....we had some VERY good ones too!

Our 3B ump for the Champ game removed himself from the game because his sponsor team was playing in it.....Dale "G" supposedly works the WAC Conference.....does that mean he was ranked # 3 or 4 for the week, ranked lower than me? I don't think so.

The 3B umpire is very important when the 2B umpire goes out properly. I wasn't more important at 1B then the guy working 3B. We moved our RF line guy into 3B...another umpire still in closing ceremony uniform inherited the RF line....and ended up making 5-6 calls out there.

Again my young umpire brother Nate, I'm not kicking shins....just 30 + years of umpiring coming through!

Jesse did well this year. He went out of his way to explain the process for his semi-final and Champ game selections....he didn't have to do that.

HE chooses the best guys he believes he saw that week....and there's your semi-final and Champ game guys.

However, the consensus among those umpires for week 10, 1010 thought that one semi-final plate umpire was in a word....HORSESH*#....not my word.....I don't know the guy from Joe Blow....but anyway.....just the consensus in the barracks area.

Jesse said he chooses the semi crews and the Champ game crew....and the 830 and 1200 games are spit out by the computer based on scores entered from the GD ["gosh darn"] evaluations.

My crew for week 10?

I had a several time CDP CC, or so he said, as one umpire....he quickly became my "go to" guy helping with evals.....he was my best guy....I suggested a plate game for him on Thursday....he ended up at 2B in a Semi.

I had a 21 YO GREENHORN who had good instincts, piss poor uniforms....but outstanding enthusiasm. He got better each day.

Told him to "lose the blue belt"....I never saw it again.

Told him if he was going to wear WalMart pants....get them size appropriate...the 2nd day...he was better looking with size appropriate pants.

I suggested a Thurs base game for him....he got 2B on an 830 game.

I had TWO guys about 5 ft 6 and pushing 400 lbs that just could not move.

Too fast on out calls that they BOTH had to change to safe's.

One of them rang a kid up on STRIKE ONE...yeah....STRIKE ONE....

I suggested that "if they must work" on Thurs.....umpire "A" should be on a line.....he was assigned 1B but that got changed real fast......

Umpire "B", I suggested he do either a line or the "safest" possible base.....he got a plate.

So...no matter WHAT the evaluation.....I believe Jesse when he said he watches umpires....he takes notes both mental and actual written ones....and does his semi and Champ game selections that way!

To all going next week....

Kick it in the arsss guys.....have a great time!

I ended up in the hospital this past week. So I only did about 3 games the whole week. I didn't see you there Ed, but it looks like you had a blast.
