The Dumb things the RATs say....

I'm doing a Connie Mac (15-16 yr) game a few weeks ago and the home team is getting pounded. Of course, I'm behind the plate begging for the 10 run rule to take effect.

Coach changes pitchers twice to no avail in same inning. It's a walk fest even with a liberal strike zone (against my grain). Finally, new pitcher comes in and throws 2 warm ups. First pitch ends up bouncing 20 feet in front of the plate. He screams at the HC "I can't pitch with this hole on the mound". Visiting 3rd base coach comes running up to me and says "He's gotta pitch to at least one batter". HUH? I tell him quietly he's a) winning by at least 12 runs we're playing OBR so he's wrong. He tries to argue but I send him back to 3rd.

I later find out that he's applying CYO (Catholic Youth Org) rules for whatever reason. I had to roar when I heard that. What's he doing up at that level is beyond me.

I'd say the coach is right:

OBR 3.05(: If the pitcher is replaced, the substitute pitcher shall pitch to the batter then at bat, or any substitute batter, until such batter is put out or reaches first base, or until the offensive team is put out, unless the substitute pitcher sustains injury or illness which, in the umpire-in-chief’s judgment, incapacitates him for further play as a pitcher.

The coach was right and you were wrong on this one.

Had a coach come to me between innings once after I had just balled about three flat curves from his pitcher that broke across the plate but stayed high and said, " I noticed you didn't call any curveballs strikes, do I need to stop calling that pitch ?" I know that's a BS way to argue balls and strikes but it was such a dumb question I just told him that wasn't my department.

BTW, the rule I quoted is why some OC will do the following (at least in MLB):

1. Have a pinch hitter announced, putting in a lefty when the pitcher is righty (or vice versa)

2. Wait for DC to bring in relief pitcher that matches the batter

3. Announce a new pinch hitter

I haven't seen it done in years, but I also don't watch as much baseball now as I did in the past.

I haven't seen or heard this done in quite a while either. I've mostly been listening to a few games a night on mlb.com alternative audio when there are early start times. It was an interesting tactic though.

Last night in LLBB 10-11 year old game. Batter hits a foul ball that ricochets off the fence near the dugout and rolls directly to the 1BC who is a kid. He reaches down and picks up the ball. OC starts yelling that he's out and pointing at the 1BC. Who's out, the 1BC? It is amazing what a RAT thinks he can pull.

1. This is a pretty standard rule. I don't get how you don't know that. But it happens, I make mistakes all the time.

2. I would have said "Coach, has he come out of the game yet?" When he replyed "No" I would have said "Get back down to the third base box and we will handle it when it comes up." I hate that, arguing before it is even an issue.
