I worked a Cal Ripken 12U double header earlier this season with a newbie (it was my first small field game in about 10 years). I was shocked with the lack of knowledge of the coaches. I thought you guys would get a kick out of this.

1) I was PU and my BU dropped the flag about 10 times in the first 3 innings. The home manager informs me between innings that that had never been called on them before. And I needed to know that they are allowed to leave as soon as the pitcher releases the ball. Also, they are not returned on a leadoff -- it's an out. That's why it is never called.

2) BR runs through 1st on a ground ball to short. When returning to 1st, he turns left. "He's out! He's Out! Don't you know the rules? That's called all the time!":rollinglaugh:

3) Pitcher hits the Batter with a one-hopper to the plate. And of course the coach lets me know a pitcher has to hit a batter with a pitch in flight for it to be a hit by pitch. But this time I finally get through to him. I give him a situation. A MLB pitcher is pissed at the batter, so he one hopps his 95 mph fastball at the batter and hits him on four straight pitches. Does this make sense? You could see the lightbulb come on.

I normally do Legion AAA and Men's ball and don't nearly get as much flack in those leagues as I did in that double header.

Closed bases on a 12U game? Never seen that. I have seen closed bases on 10U.

I have even worked 9u open bases.

I do agree coaches don't know crap at these younger ages.

You've never watched the LL Regionals and WS games on TV?

ALL of LL 12U is closed bases. Ripken (Babe Ruth) and Dixie have closed bases on their 60' 12U programs.

In my area of the country the independent leagues have closed bases in 12U.

It's the way the majority (not all - the majority - i.e. more than half) plays at that age.

I guess I need to open my eyes to the rest of the world.

I work mostly Babe Ruth and I guess it must be 70' bases cause I have never seen closed bases on 12U here in the Jacksonville Area.

Are you just starting out? I'd guess you're new as CR only started the 70' program in 2007.
