Eastern Carolina Athletic Park will proudly host the first annual Southern Umpire Camp. Instructors will include

three top respected major league and college umpires and will be held at

Eastern Carolina Athletic Park on January 29th, 2010 - January 31, 2010.

I've been to the International Camp and will be attending the Southern in Atlanta in a few weeks. These are top notch camps with top notch instructors. Not only are these camps chock full of great instruction but are a good time as well.

If you can attend it will be well worth it.

Hmmm... interesting topic being covered at that clinic:

"Clearing the bat". ;)

They actually briefly covered it at the International Clinic I went to in Oct.

Some of the main points were:

It was a secondary duty

Keeping your eyes on the action while doing it

Don't fling it

Same here - slide it, keep your eyes on the action.

There are some guys that say don't EVER touch it. I think that's just plain wrong.

At a Gerry Davis clinic led by Scott Higgins, Joe Burleson, and Bill Speck we were taught "NAP".

N= Necessary - Is it necessary to move the bat? Is it in the way?

A= Available - Is the bat available to me? Is it close or far away?

P= Possible - Do I have time to move the bat and not get in the way of a play at the plate?

We were told that if we have all three parts to keep our eye on the ball and slide the bat behind us between our legs.
