Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and to umpiring. I'm doing rec league up to15U ball and am in the process of acquiring my gear. I quickly learned the importance of a hardshell CP with ample clavical protection in a 12U game and upon reading that many of you guys like the old model Champion P210 - I went on a witchhunt for one. I called one place and talked to the guy and he assured me that the one he had in stock was the old model, so I ordered it. Well, when it came in I discovered that it was the newer style Champion CP. I called the company back and they agreed to let me return it and they would even pay return shipping. The CP was about $45 including shipping. I guess what I'm asking is - is there really too much wrong with this new style of CP and would it give me adequate protection for the level of ball that I'm working? I'm on a somewhat limited budget and would love to be able to afford a Wilson Plat. or Gold, but with all of the other stuff I need to get going, I just can't swing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Doug

Modad:

Welcome aboard.

I believe that the major difference between the new and the old Champion P210 is the manner in which the protective plates are attached to the padding. This was viewed as a infringement on The West Vest patent and they had to change it from velcro to rivets. I would not think that this would negatively impact the performance of this CP. It just might make it harder to clean.

I would think that this would be a serviceable CP for you. I know of a few people that wear these at the Varsity/Sr Legion level with no complaints. The Platinum and Gold are the standard (for the time being) but, you need to buy what you can afford.

BTW I found one for $33.48 with $6.99 shipping. However you may want to stay with your previous retailer as it seems that they stood behing their error.
