  1. Base hit down the LF line, rolling towards the wall. F7 runs over to cut it off. Ball deflects off, or is unintentionally kicked by F7 over the fence/under a tarp, etc. Had it gotten by F7 the ball would most likely kick off the wall in play. Is this 2 bases TOP in both OBR and FED? Does the ball have to stop rolling to be a 2 base award from the time of the deflection?
  2. Going way back in time to my first season doing high school ball. I was on the bases, working with an older guy from another association...someone I had never worked with, or even met. He was quite proud to tell me early on that this was his 36th year of high school baseball. Everything went fine until: Runner on first, LH pitcher. He comes set, steps off with his back (left) foot and snaps a quick throw to first. Ball skips in dirt, clips the helmet of the runner diving back, then bounces in to dead ball territory. I call TIME, and send the runner to 3rd. DC approaches my partner...I was too far away to hear what he said, but I did hear partner's response "Yeah, Skip. I'll take care of it." He then motioned for me to come conference. HIM: Why are you sending that guy to 3rd? ME: Throw from an infielder goes to DBT, 2 bases. HIM: But the throw came from the pitcher, that's just one base. ME: You must not have seen him step off. HIM: Sure I saw him step off, but he's still the pitcher. ME: I don't believe you are correct. Once he disengages, he becomes an infielder. HIM: No, as long as he's on the mound, he's a pitcher. Trust me, I've been at this a long time. This goes back and forth for a bit, I eventually gave in (he's senior and it's his plate), but bet him a beer I was right. Partner sends runner back to 2nd. Now out of the dugout comes OC. He's walking slowly, not saying a word, but he's flipping through pages of a rule book. U1 to OC: You better not be coming at me with a rule book. OC (just now looking up from book): John, I'm confused... U1:You can have the next hour or so in the parking lot to study your stinkin' book, 'cause YOU'RE GONE! Guys like this are the reason we now have to issue warnings. PS: He never did buy me that beer.
  3. FED frosh. game. I'm PU. Bases empty. Batter hits a fly down the RF line, partner goes out for fair/foul, catch/no catch. I've got the batter runner. Ball falls fair. I'm at 2nd for what looks like a play that's going to develop there. As f9 throws to 2nd, BR is between 1st and 2nd. F9 airmails the throw to 2nd, and it's rolling towards the LF foul line about 20 feet behind 3rd base. DBT is about 10-15 feet past the foul line. F7 comes running in to try to stop the ball before it heads into DBT. He slides, and makes contact with the ball, and the ball rolls into DBT. Runner is on his between 2nd & 3rd when F7 contacts the ball. I call time, and award BR home. (2 bases from the time of touch). Was this correct? Does it matter that I believe the thrown ball would have gone out of play even if F7 never got to the ball?( in which case BR would be awarded 3rd. 2 from time of throw.) I ruled once F7 made contact, the award is now 2 bases from time of contact. I keep thinking about FED's ruling on a wild pitch that is heading into DBT and the catcher kicks it. If the umpire thinks the ball would have gone out of play without the kick, award is one base TOP. If the pitch has stopped and F2 then supplies the impetus for the ball to go out, the award is 2 base time of kick. Would this ruling apply to thrown ball heading out of play?
  4. I was working tournament today. F1 throws pitch which is ball 4 and rolls into dead ball territory in a hole in the fence under backstop. I awarded the runner second base since he was already entitled to first because of the walk. Was I correct?
  5. Situation: Runner on 1st. Pitcher goes from the wind up. R1 takes off on first motion. B2 hits ball to F4. By this time R1 is already on his way to 3rd. F4 fumbles the ball and overthrows F5 at 3rd base. Ball goes into the stands. Question: Does R1 get home because 2nd base was conceded by pitcher via the windup OR does R1 get 3rd because of 2 bases on overthrow from time of pitch....... OR does the act of fumbling the ball by F4 negate the award being from time of pitch?
