Brushing up on my rules before games start and have this question rattling around in my head.
Plays at the plate with contact are bound by 2 scenarios:
1) Train wreck - catcher and runner both doing their jobs and contact just happens. From my understanding this is a play on situation
2) MC - runner lowers shoulder, extends his arms after contact. Runner is out, ball is dead, ejection follows.
My question - is there anything in between?
Further, can anyone imagine a play where there is an illegal slide (not considering force play, jumping/hurdling over non lying player, or diving over any player) or illegal contact where the runner would be out yet remain in the game.
Our association had a coaches panel where one of them said they would like to see this "tweener" call more often. Rules 8-4-2 (b)© seem to allow for it.
But, being back in umpiring for only 2 years, I was wondering if this is a practical option. Frankly, it seems sort of wishy-washy to me and I had trouble coming up with a play where this would be a call. Maybe if a kid awkwardly got caught inbetween sliding and not sliding and made contact with a catcher.
