This is the first good luck I've had of Miami's park. I like traditional/old school (our new stadium looks like an old stadium), but IMO it's nice to have a new stadium that went all-out modern. Top 9 coming up, and it's good to hear the USA fans making some noise. ...and David Wright's new nickname is "Captain America"? I can dig it.

Now what was Adam Jones' problem?! Gives the evil-eye to U1 for five seconds, followed by "that's bullsh**", then the replay shows him out by almost half-a-step. Maybe he's letting all of that "speed of Adam Jones" get in his head...

Holy crap, Marvin Hudson just took that high heater U3K in his grill dead-on! I didn't see glove or bat even touch it. He's seeing spots, but nice reaction by all the players to just start wandering around while Marvin got rid of some of the stars.

That would be a good rule change -- on a home run, no need to run the bases, just count the runs. Until then, enforce the rule. And, I don't get the impression that the umpire needed to be a detective to figure out that the runner misse the plate. Might not have been 1/2 way up the baseline as you suggest, but I'm sure it was obvious to anyone paying attention (like the defense). ---------------------- Nice job, Marc. Each runner shall touch the bases in order... one of the objects of the game, if I recall. I believe it's part of my job to watch for it. If a runner misses one, and the DT appeals, I'm not gonna' tell them that I don't feel like calling it today, or worse yet, lie and say I didn't see it. If see a runner miss a base or home, and if the appeal comes via any rules set, I'm going to honor it. Maybe next time, the players will do what they see on TV and stay clear until the HR guy touches... and just like we all see, the PU or BU trying to get a good angle to see the touch. It's not a judgement call. (Coach: "Blue, he missed the plate." Blue: "Aw, he was close enough. Let's Play!" .......Really?....)

Nice job USA! Now let's get out of the second round for once! Now for what could be the Game Of The Day: The battle of the islands! Dominican Republic vs. Puerto Rico in San Juan. Both are already in Round 2, but when these two get together...

MLB.com GameDay is about 10 seconds ahead of the game. Kinda' cool to see what the pitch is, location, and result on the PC, then see it happen on TV. The "Scout" on it is pretty observant... "Holland is having trouble locating his sinker."

Triple header today: Spain vs. Venezuula (playing for pride) at 12:30 ET. USA vs. Canada (win or head back to Spring Training) at 4:00; and at 7:30, the Dominican Republic vs. Puerto Rico (Bragging rights and top seed in their Pool on the line. They split two in Feb. at the Caribbean WS, and PR lost in the finals to Mexico by 1... and they're still a little hacked about that.) Between all that and NASCAR, it's gonna' be a pretty unproductive Sunday... The whole "run differential per inning" tie-breaker needs to just go away. Tie-breakers are needed, but encouraging teams to run up the score shouldn't be an option.

Not just some kid from AA. He's 2010 first round draft pick Jameson Taillon. Drafted out of Woodland high school, Texas. In his 1st two minor league seasons he's got a 3.72 era, 1.15 whip and has struck out 8+ batters per 9 innings. Not bad for a kid who won't turn 22 until November. Should be fun to watch. --------------------------------- I missed his name the firt time around, but I looked up a little more on him right after I posted that. Wasn't he drafted right after Bryce Harper? I think a lot of people will know who he is after today, and we'll all probably see more of him later in the summer. Biggest game of his life, and I wish him luck... but not TOO MUCH luck "Hey kid! You're gettin' the ball against USA in an elimination game. No pressure! Go get 'em!" I bet he's stoked... Agreed. This'll be fun.

No suspensions are coming for "The Brawl". "Because at least one club -- and potentially both -- will not advance to the second round, WBCI has determined that disciplinary measures would not have a meaningful corrective impact," the statement read. "Thus, discipline will not be imposed beyond today's seven game ejections."

--------------------- Losing two out of three in the first round will kick them out, plain and simple... pretty much double-elimination. In international team competition, the format is pretty standard. There really isn't time for a double-round robin since MLB starts in three weeks, and they have to start/finish the semis and final rounds. As far as the qualifying for 2017, any team that can't get out of the first round AND finishes last in pool play (especially with all of the games in their own country... the country the game was invented in) needs to go through the grinder like everybody else. MAYBE it'll wake up USA Baseball and more players will want to contribute next time. But... one game at a time. Let's take care of Canada first. If we don't... well...

Well that sets up the USA vs. Canada showdown in the elimination game to see who goes to the second round in Miami. Game time is 4:00 EDT Sunday. With all due respect to my brothers in blue up in the Great White North... I really don't want to get eliminated by Canada. It'll be Derek Holland of the Rangers for Team USA up against some kid from AA for Canada. Win or go home... or back to Spring Training.

From Gil over at UEFL: *Following the game, crew chief and UIC Brian Gorman (USA/MLB) reported the following ejections: 1) Mexico pitcher Arnold Leon; 2) Mexico Manager Rick Renteria [warnings previously issued; Rule 8.02(d)]; 3) Mexico pitcher Alfredo Aceves; 4) Mexico center fielder Eduardo Arredondo; 5) Mexico pitcher Oliver Perez; for a total of five Mexico players and coaches. 6) Canada left fielder Rene Tosoni; 7) Canada pitcher Jay Johnson; 8) Canada second baseman Pete Orr; for a total of three Canada players and eight overall ejections. *These eight ejections are an International Baseball and WBC record. I don't know if there are any mandatory suspensions following EJ's, but whether there are or aren't, methinks there will some anyway. Yep, Hickox did a great job on Molina sticking that elbow out. Also, I've seen all of the crews showing restraint on some of the "antics" by the players and coaches.... like that Cuban coach and the gloves the other night.

So what from what they showed... In the format, runs matter. With a 6 run lead B1 for Canada bunts his way on. F5 casually picks up the ball , and as he tosses it to F1, F5 tells F1 to drill the next batter. F1 promptly does so. Benches clear and a hockey game breaks out. Yeah, ump_24... 57 dropped his gloves and knew how to handle the business. Puerto Rico vs. Venezuela on now. I've been looking forward to this one! Home game for PR, and it's win-or-go-home for VEN with Zambrano on the hill. Maybe just a little passion in this one? Top 4 and Zambrano's already going off on the PU.
