Punished both teams? Heck one team got a win. What i've seen so far thats all that the parents care about anyway. How fair would it be to the team that didn't have a coach ejected to watch all of the ejected coaches antics go un puninshed. You can't let coaches get away with everything because to hold them accountable is punishing the kids.

They were rivals but not unfriendly. Most of them play together in travel ball. Good points though. I guess it would have been different if it would have been a little higher pitch. Thanks for feed back.

Local league game. 14u Fastpitch softball, top 2 teams in standings in meaningless last game of the season. VT is 3 games up on HT with one to play. Top of 5th, VT batting with 8 run lead, VT catcher at plate. She is 3 for 3. HT catcher looks at coach in dugout for sign. She double takes and coach says just do it. The pitcher then hit the VT batter in the thigh. I hesitated and didn't do anything. It was obviously intentional. I kicked it. Would anyone have dumped HT coach, catcher, and pitcher, without a warning. Let me have it.

I think for a 13u game if you dump a coach, I'm assuming he was in bench area and he comes out to you on the field and does anything other than ask you a question or bark for a short period of time, ending game is probably ok. Thats still young enough where coaches do some really stupid things sometimes. Being that anything under 13 or 14 year old teams is the pinnacle of coaching, thus the best coaches in the game forgo their major league careers to stay in that level. :jerkit:

He didn't argue. When I read what he said after i wright it down, it really sounds goofey. It was probably the volume in which he said it, and the sarcastic tone he was using. The head coach understood when I explained it to him. Thanks for the feed back.

The parents of these 10u's around here get pretty harsh sometimes. Once they get to the 12, 14, or 16u's they calm down a bunch. They ususally don't need any help getting riled up. I was hoping that I wasn't to quick on it. If it's any defence he was wearing a visor and matching unifor to the girls. Should have got him when I first saw him. :D

I had the plate on a 10u fastpitch softball game, opening round of Babe Ruth state championships. R-1 with no out. My partner called R-1 out for leaving early. Time, no pitch, runner is out. One of the assistants walked to the fence and was telling the group of parents how my partner only wanted to show that he knew the rule and she didn't leave early. My partner could not have heard the comments. At the time what he said sounded alot worse than when I type it out. I ejected the coach for inciting fans. The head coach, calmly, approached me after asking permission and wanted to know what happened. I told him and all was well for the rest of the game. Was I right for my actions? I felt that the coach abused his right to be in the team area by communicating in such a way with his teams parents. I had a warm fuzzy feeling afterward but now I want to learn from it.

My father got layed off from his job and was sitting around the house all of the time. He has played for the same softball team since 1972, I have been playing on the team since 1996. Talk about fun, it's neat to see your almost 60 year old dad playing 3rd base against a bunch of people my age. Well he asked me to get him in touch with the local softball booking agent. He has seen me umpire fastpitch for a while ( I am booking agent and head umpire for my county's fastpitch league) and wanted to give slow pitch a chance. I told him no chance I was going to let him work for anyone but me. So I got to train my father to be a fastpitch umpire. Talk about fun. He gets so exited, he calls all of his outs like its a banger to end a playoff game. He leans left when he calls safe and looks like an airplane on approach. I'm working hard with him but its fun to work with your Dad. Happy Fathers Day everyone.

I have been training and recruiting new umpires for a fast pitch softball league for a couple of years now. I have had several younger people trying to get into umpiring, mostly girls that used to play in the league. Some coaches go alittle too far in trying to jump on them. It's great when you can get these kids to have an interest in umpiring, but it really puts a sour taste in their mouths when coaches act like this.

I just finished Ron Luciano's book The Umpire Strikes Back. Man I couldn't put it down. I don't often read books, so when I got this one I thought it would sit in the bathroom for months. This book is great and if you have a chance get it. Kind of makes you think about how serious we take ourselves. I wish I was old enough to have seen this guy in person, cause reading about him is funny enough.

Hello all. I really enjoy this site. It has been a big help to me. Finally decided to join so I can participate. I am from Waxhaw North Carolina, near Charlotte. I've been umpiring for about 6 years now. I started with slow pitch softball and moved to fast pitch. I have been doing baseball lately, nothing over 16u. A couple of years ago the county rec fast pitch league plopped the booking of umpires in my lap, so ive been doing that ever since. It's been alot of fun and has made me a better umpire, or at least there is no one to tell me how bad I am. Anyway glad to be here.
