Since I am in So Cal, I am going to wait and see what the details of the So Cal Wendelstedt clinic are (final cost, dates, instructors, etc.) before I decide. But the Southern camp is another one I am considering as well. I hear good things about it and in particular, that Paul Nauert is an incredible instructor.

This event would be about a 2 hr. drive, and, based on what I have seen from them, probably about 150 dollars + a couple of nights in a hotel. All in all I'm guessing it will be about 300.00 give or take a little. I think this amounts to about 40/50% less than it would cost to go to one of the Evans Classics.

Well... there is a Wendelstedt Clinic scheduled for some time in March. That is the only thing that I know of locally. I am guessing that it will be a 3 day event. I don't mind traveling a bit if the investment is really worth the increased cost.

A full Pro School is just not realistic for 2010 (maybe if i get laid off...lol) So I am wondering.... What is my best value for a clinic or camp? Is a 3-day event long enough for a novice? Where is the best bang for the buck to be found? Thanks...

So I have not made any money yet, but I anticipate that whatever I make will go to cover the costs of my gear and toward at least one training event (clinic/ school) this year. Anything above that will be gravy.

I will check with Wendelstedt and see if i can get a bit more clarity on what to expect in their 3-day clinic (instructors, curriculum, etc). The fact that they have one scheduled one in my neck of the woods, and, that it appears that it would be less costly than Evans, is appealing. However, They seem to be flying by the seat of their pants here....Things seem much more clear cut, and, for a short term clinic, more comprehensive, with Evans. I think i will have to strongly consider waiting for an opportunity to attend one of the Evans Classics.

This is an interesting point. I certainly want to be trained by someone interested in training me. That is often evidenced in the degree of professionalism (or lack thereof) exhibited in communication and other business transactions (ie. product sales etc). I guess what I am ultimately trying to discern is which of the pro-schools is most interested in, and, committed to, training those of us without professional aspirations.

What are the essential materials that should be in every umpires library? in particular i am thinking of the essentials for a beginning umpire, but all recommendations are gladly welcomed. Books (rules, mechanics, etc), Dvds etc Thanks

I am definitely planning to go to the Wendelstedt So Cal Umpire Classic in March. It just makes sense all the way around: only two hours away from me by car, relatively low total cost, weekend schedule is a good time frame for my first taste... all in all a good deal. in addition, a friend of mine (and one of the umpires that I will be working with this year) went to both Evans and Wendelstedt, and when I queried him yesterday he said unequivocally that he preferred Wendelstedt based on the quality of the instruction/ instructional staff. ump-attire.com and between the lines both offer the titanium in standard profile or low profile models.

Mine is also the standard profile.... bummer about the denting mentioned above. Hope I can avoid that hassle. I am considering alternative pads but I think that the doeskin, which is somewhat more substantial/ bulkier than the pads that come with the titanium, may add weight and diminish visibility just a tad.

I ordered both the Wilson dyna-lite mask (doeskin pads) and The Titanium. After trying both I was amazed by the fit and feel of the Titanium. The padding on the Titanium, while not as substantial (or bulky) feels so soft and fits perfectly. The thinner bars on the frame and slightly slimmer padding design allows for greater visibility. It also, to my surprise, felt so much lighter than I expected, which, when combined with the increased visibility, made it an easy choice. The Dyna-lite went back the next day.

And then some...lol. I did return the dyna-lite mask (doeskin pads) today. The Titanium was so much lighter, which, when combined with the increased visibility, made it an easy choice.

Nate was pretty hard on Wendelstedt (perhaps rightly but hard to tell). Any one else have opinions on the two schools.

The Wilson Titanium Masks have been out for a while now. How are they performing and holding up?

That is a good plan... I will probably go to the Wendelstedt clinic in march... relatively in expensive and within driving distance. Got a big box of gear from ump-attire today. I think I'm probably set for life ...lol

Heard from both Evans and Wendelstedt...Evans in about 12 hours ...and Wendelsted in a bit longer.... both were very gracious and helpful. I guess the hard part is choosing.

I both called and e-mailed Wendelstedt...so far I have not heard back from them. Thanks for the input guys... I e-mailed Evans as well... guess I'll see who responds.

Thanks for the welcome! I am in So. California, Ventura County. I will be doing Little league, Pony League, and eventually NABA adult league. I understand there is a Wendelstedt clinic in So. Cal in March. Anybody been to one of these? Thanks.
