We had just moved to Boyertown, PA. Unknown to me it was a hotbed for American Legion baseball (they had won 2 world series recently). Anyway, my son's first Tee Ball game started and my now ex-wife would not let me help out. The coach was going it alone. Now, about the 2nd inning one of my son's teammates clobbers one to right field (a Barry Bonds HR for a 5 year old) and as he's running up the first base line the Dad sitting next to me and myself hear a woman yell "Kill him". :WTF We look at each other in disbelief. Neither one of us lived in the community that long. Needless to say, we both got involved in coaching after that game. I didn't know Tee-ball could be a bloodsport.

And a second Boyertown story.....

I was umpiring the 11-12 year olds about 3 years later (son not playing this game) and the coach had been riding me big time. The team mother started joining in while the coach was on 3rd base. I finally went over and quietly talked to the coach and told him in no uncertain terms was I tolerating any more nonsense since the kids were starting to join in the carping. He agreed and ceased his whining. Well, the team mom gets REAL loud to make up for the coach and the kids on the bench are getting just as loud. Well my "dad" instinct kicks in and I figure she's not being a role model. I wait for the pitcher to start his windup and yell TIME! I take my mask off and then stroll over to the bench slowly, drawing attention of the crowd, point my finger at her and say "one more word and you're gone".

As I later told my wife, my life passed before my eyes. If looks could kill I would not be writing this because I would be dead. I later said that she was either a) going to kill me on the spot or B) dig a hole so deep she'd never have to face anyone again. Needless to say, the carping from the bench ceased that night. :TD:

This is why I'm glad I umpire where I do. What you might consider low level complaining, etc, is pretty much our highest level. But a lot of coaches are even scared to question you as umpire.

You should have stopped it long before you did. First, if she was deliberately trying to get their players to go along, then I would've had a stern talking to both her and the coach right away. Never tolerate loud negative talk from the dugout, to me that's a quick, "keep your kids under control, coach" kind of moment.

I had a PONY game several years ago. There was one woman sitting behind the backstop riding my partner's ass all the time. After couple of innings my partner (PU) gave warning to the home team coach - the woman was obviously mother of one of his players. Few pitches later my partner finally gets enough: he calls "TIME", points to the first base coan yellin "You're out!", turns to third base coach, pointing him and telling "And you're next!" The coach from first base didn't say a word, just walked out of the field, behind the backstop, took this woman's arm and physically dragged her out of there.

After the game we were changing equipments - I had the dish in the next game - this woman suddenlly appeared to walk towards us. We thouhgt that now the SH*# hit the fan, but she actually came to apologize us of her bad behaviour. That was nice.
