I've noticed 3 or 4 double plays where R1 was a dead duck and slid way before 2B where the slide ended well short of the base. They are not required to slide at that point and the pivot man was throwing after crossing the base to the outside. Continuing to run at that point would not be illegal. Are they doing it to get out of the way of a throw where the pivot man doesn't cross? Seems like they shouldn't have to per rule but maybe they don't want to get hit by a throw straight across.
