So I finally did it. I didn't think I would get one in before the HS season ended. There's a coach or two that probably needed to go before now, but when it finally happened it was a player. After a banger at 1st where the runner was called out he threw his helmet and started pointing and yelling at the BU while he was walking to his mid-inning spot. If the BU would have heard it I would have left it up to him, but I wasn't going to let that mess slide behind his back.

The head coach told me that's what the guy needed to have happen because his temper was a problem a lot. The kid also apologized to us after the game. I thought that was pretty stand-up. Still sent in the report, though.

My only concern is that the situation was b/t the BU and the kid. It's most likely a HTBT situation, but I would be hesitant to get involved unless it is obnoxious or profane. By all means do not leave your partner hanging, but it probably preferable to have the BU handle it himself.

One thing that could become difficult in a situation like this is when the initial grief is b/t somebody and your partner if things get escalated and your partner EJ's him you are a "neutral" person when you need to go in and be the rodeo clown. In this situation had it become escalated there wouldn't have been any "neutral" person to be the rodeo clown and things could get out of hand quickly.

Once again I wasn't there and I have EJ'd a 3rd base coach who was giving crap to my partner before. In my case my partner was just going to sit there and take it and never pull the trigger himself and I needed to keep things from getting any further out of hand. But just keep this in mind.

I disagree with this and I'll tell you why.

When we take the field, we are a team. If you let players/coaches ride you're partner, you're letting the inmates run the asylum. I would hope that if someone was snipeing me, my partner would step in and take care of it.

What if your partner hears the comment coming from the dugout, but is far enough away that he doesn't know who said it?

Have each others backs out there, guys.

Yeah, my partner didn't even hear it. His back was turned, and he was about 45 feet away by the time the player lost it. I absolutely would have left it between him and the player if he had any idea it had happened. As it was, I wasn't going to let the guy's pointing and yelling and mouth diarrhea go unanswered.
