Hey guys,

The spring is always busy for me with LL baseball going on, but that all dies down in June. How do you guys stay involved umpiring games during the summer? I'm out here in Washington state and I'm only 16 so I can't do NBUA. I want to keep doing games as deep into the summer as I can and just don't know where to get started. Thanks.

You're never too young to understand the concept of networking...and that skill will benefit you throughout life. Talk with the other umpires that you work with and see if they have a work prospect for you. Talk to your assigner...he usually knows other assigners. Talk to coaches that may coach travel ball teams, they may have a contact for you. That's networking..It'll be uncomfortable to start, but gets easier with practice.

Do you know how USSSA assigning works? One of the coaches in my area that has a tournament team recommended it. I found the link to register but didn't want to sign up blind. I'm assuming I would just have to get in touch with the tournament director but I'm not sure.

Assigning is assigning. Assigners have games to get covered and they match "competent" umpires to those games. I doubt it's much different anywhere. The TD will most likely know who the UIC (umpire in charge) and/or the assigner is. I wouldn't sign-up blindly. Some internet sign-ups aren't even monitored by those in charge. Call them. I am sure they want to hear from you...really.
