OBR 15U. on the bases, working with a younger partner with no real game management skills who seemed to be a little out of his league tonight working behind the plate tonight in a regional finals tourney.  3 hours and 25 minutes for 7 innings.  Non existent strike zone which turned into a walk fest and since the pitchers were throwing so many pitches we had 7 pitching changes, granting time anytime someone needed to scratch his crotch, and he wasn't paying attention between the innings making sure the pitcher only got 5 warm ups...  It was painful for everyone involved.  I did my damnedest to help him get the game moving along but any advice i had seemed to go in one ear and out the other.

My first question is "do you have anything for me?"  Then it's "did you disagree with any of my calls?"  If he says "no" I try to remember the closest play or pitch I had and ask him "how about that pitch / play in the 2nd inning?"  If he still has nothing Im pretty much assuming he isn't going to ask for anything from me.  He is there only for a paycheck which is acceptable but not my kinda partner.

We had a real good pre-game the day after.  He acknowledged he had a real bad night behind the plate, and even recognized most of the mistakes he made.  He was on the dish for our second game in the morning and he was completely on the ball, had what seemed to be a pretty killer zone and we whipped through the 7 innings in about an hour 45. It was almost like a Jeckle and Hyde changes as he seemed to take the game management skill ideas I passed onto him in the pre-game (5 pitches between the innings, not calling time to clean off the plate, not granting time every time someone asked, making his calls loudly and apply them.

So maybe we learn to to be to judgmental when we work with someone new. Maybe its just a bad day.

Yea! sometimes you can make a difference. Tom Peters said there is only one method of influence, it is example.
