Coaches are convinced they know the rules when they don't know jack $hit!!!
Had a pop up to half way up the 1st base line. There was no contact but F1 had to teach over the runner to try to catch the ball. Missed it. I call Int. Coaches didn't like it.

Had a batter bunt. Runner runs the whole way in fair territory . F2 sails the ball over runner and over 1st. I call RLI.
Coach had a fit. It's getting worse. And until we get backed up on ejections AND the smittys and 16 year olds say NO we may be doomed.

One of the problems is umpires that won't make the calls they need to make then we make it and it becomes an issue.

Smittys who would not say SH*# if their mouth were full of it.

All about the money.

agreed, we need to somehow educate the coaches, how we do that who knows. I know in my chapter before every season, the high school coaches are invited to our rules sessions and they can ask questions on game situations. maybe the local leagues need to dop that with the umpires explaining some of the missed conceived rules. Just a thought. I know it will take a few hours away, but it might help in the long run.

We do a joint session with the umpires and coaches before each season titled: " most misunderstood rules and situations"

Pays off. Great 16 slide presentation.

Most people aren't that interested in the details. They think they "know enough". Works "most of the time". Can't get them to pay any attention until they're trying to figure out why an umpire ruled against them.

How long have you been umpiring ?

3 years, why do you ask?

Most coaches don't want to learn the rules.

Don't get sarcastic with them, as that invites trouble. Explain the rule and move on.

It doesn't matter what happened last game, just what is happening in your game.

Had the same thing in a game I did but pitcher had to give way for the batter/runner and coaches kept saying it was the wrong call. Not if they choose to read the rule book it isn't.
