Batter draws a BB. He runs to first and runs through the bag (just like beating out a grounder) and veers toward the fence and returns to the bag. Is he in play or is he ok to do this?

FED:  If you run past first base on a walk you are liable to get tagged out. Doesn't matter which way he turns.

8-2-7:
A batter-runner who reaches first base safely and the overruns or overslides may immediately return without liability of being put out provided he does not attempt or feint an advance to second. A player who is awarded first base on a base on balls does not have this right.

He is allowed to without peril, in NCAA and OBR. There is no exception to the right to overrun first when advancing. Not so in FED: 8-2-7: A batter-runner who reaches first base safely and then overruns or overslides may immediately return without liability of being put out provided he does not attempt or feint an advance to second. A player who is awarded first base on a base on balls does not have this right.
