10U Funny Moment #3456

Maybe I've been lucky. I don't remember having this happen before.

 

10U tournament. OBR-based rules. I am PU. Outs don't matter. R2.  B1 singles to F8.  Throw from F8 to F2 is high and F2 back peddles to the 3B dugout side of the foul line.  F2 catches the ball over his head but does not cover the ball with his throwing hand.  F2 brings his mitt down to his waist just in time to tag R2 with the mitt, as R2 runs past him.  The tag was about 3 or 4 feet from HP.

 

The interesting bit: on the tag the ball pops out of F2's mitt and travels about 1 foot, straight into his throwing hand. He catches the ball cleanly in his throwing hand, purely by reflex, almost before he realizes what's happened, and he hangs onto the ball.

 

I called R2 out.

 

Was I right or wrong?

I think it fails "holding the ball securely and firmly".

 

A TAG is the action of a fielder in touching a base with his body while holding the
ball securely and firmly in his hand or glove; or touching a runner with the ball, or with his
hand or glove holding the ball, while holding the ball securely and firmly in his hand or
glove. It is not a tag, however, if simultaneously or immediately following his touching a
base or touching a runner, the fielder drops the ball. In establishing the validity of the tag,
the fielder shall hold the ball long enough to prove that he has complete control of the ball.
If the fielder has made a tag and drops the ball while in the act of making a throw following
the tag, the tag shall be adjudged to have been made.

Yes, thanks BigUmpire.

 

I had three games yesterday (16U, wood bat).  I did two behind the plate.  It was very smooth.  I had three games today (10U).  I had two behind the plate.  Just about all of it was smooth.  All in all I was very pleased with things.

 

Of course, it's always the one call that you doubt yourself on that stays with you.

 

But, thanks again.  I appreciate the comment.
