Think i blew a call or two today

I think i should of called obusrtion but never did mind you this is 8u so in a sense there still learning so  i am not some hot level umpire who going to enforce every rule possible.

 

Espcially at that age

 

Fast pitch softball u8 local rules or tournament are the following

5 runs per innning

10 mercy rule

6 pitch in else the six pitch is foul off you get 7 seven.

no infeild fly rule

no stealing

leading once it reaches batter.

coach behind catcher but cannot coach or do hand signals.

coach pitch. (got to be on mound)

 

So this was the call ball hit towards second base. br going to first first base man is in between the foul on home and first,  and she goes around the fielder. the second base man tags first. But she also went into dugout afterwords to.

 

The other called i clearly goof.

I for some odd reason call a foul ball when the ball was behind third base and went into foul I called foul instead of point fair.

 

 

I was going to award her the base... but i don't know why i think my mind got confuses over interference/obstruction call. Or just a brain fart i guess. i mean it was 15-1 anyways

I think the most important thing here is that you use these 8u games as an opportunity to learn.  As long as you study these plays afterward and re-evaluate what you should have done, you will make a better call next time, and just as important you will be able to explain to a coach what you did and why you did it when he asks. 

 

Some do youth ball just for the pennies it pays, but those games can be REALLY valuable because they will test your knowledge in some areas more than other games because you will see a LOT more weird situations at that level. 

 

Also, get in the book and read the definitions section - Rule 2.  Rule 2 lists the criteria you need for each call.  e.g. Tag of a runner: "Is the ball held firmly and securely? Did he tag the runner with the glove or the hand holding the ball?  Did he hold on to it long enough after the tag to show control through the tag?  Yes, yes, yes.  OK, then, now he is out."

 

This will also improve  your timing and the when you take the appropriate amount of time to evaluate each play, you are far less likely to get the call wrong.

8U ball is  much like young medics during war time. You get a lifetime of experience in just a year or two. You will see every situation imaginable and then some you never would imagine.

Every umpire makes mistakes.  Learn, and try your best to be in the best position and have the best possible mechanics.

It is very easy to get into a lull with these 8 year old games. Been there, done that.
