MLB aims to raise awareness of autism

On Monday, Major League Baseball announced that it would do something about "the things you can and can't do" as families who live with autism. MLB is teaming up with Autism Speaks, the world's leading autism science and advocacy organization, in a league-wide effort to recognize Autism Awareness Month in April.

All 30 clubs will raise awareness for the disorder during one home game in April, or on another date during the regular season. Many of the MLB Autism Awareness games throughout the league will provide special opportunities and a safe, friendly environment for families and individuals affected by autism.

My son has Autism. You could say we are very lucky he is highly functional on the spectrum. He presents as having exceptional intelligence but very little social awareness. Think either Dr. Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory or Dr. Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds as an 8 year old. 

 

Autism is highly misunderstood and in my family's situation one of the most difficult things is having to deal with people from family members to teachers who don't understand or make assumptions. 

 

I am willing to bet most members here have someone close to them who has autism, so please take a moment to learn a little about what autism is and isn't.

My 16 year old nephew has the same thing Warren. He's super smart  with numbers and history and really smart in everything else, plus he's got a touch of OCD. I agree with you about people not understanding. Very frustrating.

 

I take him deer hunting with me and all the guys at camp know how he is, so when he starts telling stories they'll look at me to see if he's exaggerating or not.
