I was helping coach in a game yesterday and opposing team's pitcher had a strange delivery. 11-12 y/o Rec league, OBR with mods, 1st day of season. He always pitched from the stretch. He would take a really wide stance and then come set with slightly less but still wide stance. Then he would rock slightly forward and then back into his delivery. He did this almost everytime, but not always. I was thinking balk but it was not called. BU said, "he does it every time, guess it's OK". I know that the "part of his natural delivery" idea is flawed. I was not sure. Even if it is not a balk, it is easy to steal on, going on the premise that once he rocks forward he can only go home with the pitch.

He needs to learn a better motion, it will lead to problems in the future. Having a motion that some balk and others don't is not smart. The "he does it everytime" agument is BS. If he does it everytime legally then it's fine. But if he does it illegally everytime then it is still a balk.

Agree a balk is a balk whether its a natural motion or not.
