I always have trouble interpretting the rule for detached player equipment in the rule books. If a throw comes in and hits either the catchers mask, bat or donut by the dugout, what is the rule? I've always struggled with this rule. Thanks.

The detached equipment rules only apply to deliberately touching the ball with detatched equipment.

If a mask, bat etc happens to get hit with a throw play the bounce.

ok thanks. What is the ruling though if a player deliberately touches the equipment?

Also, I had a kid throw a bat at a ball outside this year on a hit and run. He missed the ball, but what is the ruling if he would have hit the ball with the thrown bat?

For detached equipment to come into play, the fielder has to be holding it and touch the ball or throw it and hit the ball. If it is just laying in the field of play, it's nothing.

The thrown bat is an attempt, call the strike. If he hits it, call fair/foul accordingly.

Thank you very much.
