  1. Situation 1: Pitcher (RHP) toes the pitching plate from the wind up position, despite having the R1 on 1B. Coach yells "step off" and instead of releasing his pivot foot ( the right foot)... F1 swings the left foot around to step off (similar to seeing an inside move at 2B). I balked the kid because it just looked funny. The coach argued that his hands weren't set. My first though was there's no setting while in the wind up. Situation 2: Same as before, but this time RHP toes the rubber from the stretch. Without setting the hands, but while in contact w/ the pitch plate, the pitcher steps off w/ the wrong foot. Is this a balk? The pitchers hands never came set..., must a pitcher step off w/ the foot that's contacting w/ the rubber?
  2. thanks for the clarification. It's much clearer to me now than it was an hour ago
  3. Now when a pitcher picks off a 2b using an inside move or spaghetti leg move to 2b, but in delivering the ball he throws about 5 yards away from the base to the SS, is this legal? Technically, the pitcher does not have to throw the ball at all to 2b. So I'm interested in hearing your responses to this. Same question for a in contact pick at 3B w/ a RHP.... Pitcher Makes the pick but throws to the base position, yards away from the base and not directly to the base. (or LHP picking at 1b).
  4. My call as well.
  5. Whats your call?
  6. thanks for the update.
  7. Pitcher quick pitches the batter. The batter singles to LF with a runner at 1b. Result of the play stands, or balls dead? Is there a choice?
  8. Interesting event took place today, the batters count was 3-1 w/ a runner on 2b. The pitcher throws a wild pitch to the backstop and the ball kicks back toward the field along the line to first base. The ball 4 batter inadvertently kicks the ball on his way to first (fully outside the batters box area). Meanwhile, the 2B runner has gone to 3rd on the wild pitch.
  9. Pitcher delivers a pitch with a RH batter i the box. runner at 2B decides to steal 3B. Scenario 1 - The batter does not move and the ball is thrown right into the batters helmet. Scenario 2 - The batter does not move and the catcher throws the ball around the batter in the box, throwing the ball into left field.
  10. Now this is always a very interesting topic... Is the batter always "entitled" to the batter box? I saw a play at the plate the other night where the pitched threw a wild pitch to the back stop w/ runners on second and third. The batter, totally oblivious to the play, did not vacate the box... The catcher, decided to not to throw to the pitcher who was covering the plate, but instead... the catcher ran to tag the runner from third and he collides w/ the batter standing in the batters box. Whats the right call? You always hear coaches saying the batters entitled to the box. These interference calls, especially w/ runners at 3rd can be tricky. Note the runner from second also advanced to 3rd on the play.
  11. who else wants to play "stump the ump" ? lol. okay, only a balk... both feet foul.. but dont let it get to that.... hahaha
  12. I honestly wasn't responsible for this one... in a game tonight, one of the umpires called a fielders balk. Generally speaking, here'e the basics of the situation... The ball is put in play with everyone on the field in the positions. 1B steps to hold R1 on base and places one foot fair in front the bag and one foot foul, outside the bag (not touching the base at all). The pitch is thrown and the base umpire immediately calls "feilder balk" and awards the R1 second base. i won't bother to tell you the age group, it's irrelevant.... what's the right call? when would you make this call and whats the proper way to enforce it. Usually you see this pre-pitch, and you don't put the ball in play until everyone is on the field of play (with exception to the catcher).. At least that's what I believe you should do.... I have never called this post-pitch, so whats the right call and how do you enforce it?
  13. Do I dare.... lmao okay to restate you question... it sounds like the 2B has the ball correct... decides not to throw , but run it to first. He steps on the foot of 1b, the runner, hits the bag, then the 2b gets his foot on the base and off the foot of the 1b player. ... All that's correct, right? I would say that if i the judgement of the umpire, the runner touched the base before the 2b, he is safe.... now be careful with this because if in the opinion of the umpire, any part of his foot that stepped on the 1B players foot, touches the bag also, before the runner... then naturally he is out. the players can 't hold hands across the field to make a chain, to record the runner out. He who has the ball has to tag the runner or record the force out....
  14. No, not NCAA... Interesting ruling nonetheless.
  15. okay, so someone asked me a interesting question ... maybe one of you have the answer... Runner at 3B attempts to steal home.., in the course of home stealing, he is struck by the pitched ball as hes about to cross the plate.... What's the ruling? Me: I HAVE NO IDEA... THIS DEFIES ALMOST ALL LOGIC.
  16. #11 is imperative my favorite line is "touch gloves and come out swinging "
  17. now whats the most absurd ground rule...? One time I saw a crew calling the tree hanging over RF in fair territory, a dead ball, ground rule single.
  18. Short and sweet!
