Interesting read. I'm not a math guy so like you it made my head hurt a bit. I guess there is something to tracking the stats of how often umpire call expected or unexpected pitches. Not sure what the practical application is because as the author points out there is more to being an umpire than calling balls and strikes, but it is interesting nonetheless.
