ball hits bat - fair ball

Seen this 3 times in my career.  Batter ducks or moves to avoid an inside pitch and inadvertently his the bat and goes into fair territory.

 

First time was in High School I was base and the plate guy yells "foul ball" - out of habit I guess.  I was kind of new so I might have made that same mistake, but I didn't.  I learned from his error to have better timing on that and know where the ball goes.

 

Fast forward a few years and in a men's wood bat league, I was plate - pointed fair and catcher tag the batter who didn't move at all.

 

Last Friday night in district play in HS, 2 out bases loaded - bingo, I pointed fair - right to the pitcher who threw home for an easy third out.

This spring I had an even stranger occurrence. A 10U kid ducked on a 2 strike pitch behind his head. He failed to pull his bat down and the ball glanced off it right to the catcher's mitt. I said, "I can't believe this but..." and then gave my foul tip and strikeout mechanics. The hitter didn't understand what had happened but after a couple of moments everyone else in the park was buzzing. I was happy I was able to recognize and rule on the consequences of this strange play.

LL Minors Districts this year, I had a situation similar to this.

 

R1, 1 out, 3-0 count, batter ducks and pitch hits sweet spot of bat, rolls right to the pitcher. No one does anything, I point straight ahead for fair. Batter starts running, is halfway to first when R1 starts running. F1 has an easy out at 2nd or a bang-bang play at 1st… Throws to 1st, and throws it into right field. R1 scores, batter-runner gets to 3rd.

 

With Minors, anything is possible!!
