Coach INT

2 plays, same game this morning. HS Rec Ball, straight OBR.

1. R3, batter draws a walk. I'm in C. The 3rd base coach calls R3 over to him, about 4 feet from the bag, and starts to talk to him. The pitcher throws to F5, and yells "Tag Him!". The 3 coach, realizing that the ball's in play shoves the runner back to 3rd. Easy call, but a question. I haven't made that call in many years. That's a Live Ball call, isn't it?

2. OK, same game: R1 (I think). Ground ball to F6, who throws it to F3. Ball gets by F3, ricochets off the 1st base coach, and goes out of play. I award the BR 2nd on the. 7.05. My partner comes out and says that, because the ball came off the base coach, the BR stays at 1st. I talked him out of it. I think I got it right, didn't I? (BTW, there was no intent on the base coach: just a nitwit kid out there).

For 1: Good call. The ball is still in play on a walk. That would definitely be a coach assisting a runner. How'd that go over? lol.

2: I'll leave explanations to the more experienced guys on here, but I would have called the same thing if I didn't think the deflection/interference was intentional.

I was pretty sure I had it right, but you know when you start to second-guess yourself.

To answer your question, Mo, he looked like he was going to argue with me, but his team ran out onto the field (there were 2 outs), and one of them patted him on the head as he ran by. As I said, these were all HS Varsity players, playing a Rec League game: it was real laid-back, and we had a lot of laughs out there.

you got both right , on the base coach issue , judgment comes into play . was the coach just in the wrong place . also was the throw bad , sounds like it . now if the base coach tried to kick or slap at the errant throw . different altogether .
