Play at the Plate (Positioning)

Here's a great example of setting up on the nose of the plate and letting the play dictate to the umpire where to position himself. Had the throw pulled F2 toward first, he would have been able to easily move to 1BLX to take the play. It's all about where to start!

His adjustment was executed perfectly, however it was too late. You see when the camera freezes at 0:54, PU has no idea whether or not Molina's glove is in contact with R2's back or not, just before he reaches the plate.

If he was standing where he physically made the call when the tag was actually attempted, no one could find any flaw with his positioning and this video clip would be a fixture in umpire training for years.

That's what I noticed. He was still moving when the tag attempt occurred.
