PONY Bronco game.

Bases loaded.

Top of 4th, score 0-2.

Batter hits one to Left Center field that has a chance to leave the park.

I head to library up 3B line in case I have a catch and need to watch for R3 to tag up.

Fence is about 7 foot high and covered with green screen material.

Ball clears the fence and as I raise my right hand to signal HR, ball comes back over the fence into the field and is caught by the Left Fielder who was facing the fence on the track. did I just see :home:

Positive I observed the ball leave the park, I continue to signal HR.

Offensive team was already jumping with joy.

Home team manager comes out and says Blue how can that be a HR, it didn't leave the park. He is very calm and polite in pleading his case.

Marc, I watched that ball clear the fence. Don't ask me what it hit to come back in like that, but it cleared the fence and left the field.

As we are walking back to his dugout a couple of the fathers of his team are telling him it did leave the park.

After the game, I went out there to see what it could have hit to come back like that. There was a walkway between the two fields that had like a 4 foot fence on each side. There was about a 5 foot gap between the outfield fence and walkway fence.

Must have hit the top bar of the walkway fence and ricocheted back onto the field.

Although I am sure it left the field, would have been nice to have Instant Replay.....LOL.

That is unique, to say the least. Way to stay with your instinct on that one. Besides running away from the haunted baseball field at top speed, I have no idea how I'd have reacted to that.

P.S.-I've seen the phrase "library up" referring to the 3rd base side on here several times. What's the definition on that?:question1:

P.P.S.-I wish I could call games at locations where the parents would be honest like that. The crowds I usually have could watch a kid on a bike THROW it back in and still would yell and scream like its going to change my mind :rantoff:

Library

Comes from Jim Evans Maximizing the Two Umpire System.

A position up the 3rd Base line in foul territory, roughly about 3/4 of the way to the bag or a little further than 45 foot line on 90 foot diamond.

Since this was on 60 foot diamond about 35 feet.

From that position I can observe a catch and the tag up of R3 and R2 at least and then read where the play would go.

Hence Library - A position to read a possible play and then move into the proper position to make your call.

Get the Jim Evans Book. I highly recommend it.

Thanks, I've been wondering that. I'll look for it at B&N this week, or try to find it online

Congratulations on that :hi5:. Still working my way up into high school:rolleyes:. Done a few fall games but no spring action yet at that level. Weather's actually been ok here, no rainouts yet, but believe it or not we've had three wind-outs...gusts over 35 and they pull anyone under 13 off the field. Got rain forecasted for the weekend though...:ranton:

And who waits 'til friday??

:rantoff:

The liver is evil and must be punished, regardless of the day.

But have fun out there, and try to wait until after the game to do it lol
