A few years back, when I was first starting out, I was working the dish and if I remember correctly there was a play at home where the catcher tagged the runner coming in and somewhere in there he dropped the ball. I called him out not knowing this and people went crazy. I wasn't even considering changing the call, but after the teams were in their dugouts, I went and talked to my partner and asked him what he saw. At this point were were talking near the mound and the coach from the offense came out too. I did overturn the call to safe. Should umpires ever do that? Even if they should was the wait too long?

Sure, if you find out the ball was loose, turn it around. Your partner should come in and let you know if he has the ball out. You may have it loose but control after so he can't come in yelling the ball was out.

Michael already covered the first part of your question.

Even if they should was the wait too long?

Yes. This should have happened much, much faster. It sounds like this was the 3rd out of the inning but you also made no specific reference as to whether or not the offensive manager questioned the call. If you wait that long and there's no objection from the manager of the offensive team, let it go.

Yes change the call and fix it.

We should always strive to get the call right.

I had a similar call and did not have a partner.

The offensive team said f2 dropped the ball on the tag but when the dust cleared he had it in his bare hand and I never saw it on the ground.

If I had a partner tell me he dropped it, I would have changed the call also.
