  1. A little long, I'll apologize ahead of time So, ..yesterday in a bracket play-in game ... 14u pastime tourney .... I'm on the stick Good teams, good game, back and forth, one coach quiet and respectful, the other loud and annoying (good coach, but just boisterous). To start, loud coaches 3rd hitter swings at 3 super slow curve balls in a row. loud coach: "come on Joe, ...you've got to read the pitch,..come on, 3 in a row, really? They're laughin' at you ...even the coaches are laughing!" After a second or two of silence, ...while the next batter is getting set in the box, respectful coach says .... "Pete, hold on ...what are you talking about, no one's laughing at your players!" Pete says "I'm just saying what I saw. Tom says "No you're not, because you didnt' see anything, point to him, who was it?" Pete: you! Tom: "I was not!" meanwhile ....pitch up and away .... "ball." After the call I realize they're still going at it ..... I call time calmly, remove my mask and say ,.... "OK, OK guys, ....BOTH OF YOU ....that's enough ...... THEN MUCH to my surprise .... they keep going!! Now I'm pissed, these guys sound like 12 year old school girls going back and forth ...... in my strike call voice I interrupt ......" THAT'S ENOUGH!!!!! RIGHT NOW!!!!! STOP IT!!!!!!" You could have heard a field mouse fart from both fields that back each other (Varsity and JV field). Respectful coach Tom apologizes, .... Pete raises his hands in a "I give up" motion and turns his back. THAT is how this game starts .... top of 2nd....geeez. After the 3rd inning, I catch both coaches individually..... and I say the same thing ....... "Sorry I yelled like that, but that had to stop, ok?" Both were perfectly fine with it, and appreciated my gesture (so it seemed at least) Fast forward to the bottom of the 4th. Respectful coaches team starts making at run at their 7-0 deficit. R2 .... outs don't matter ....base hit and Tom sends his kid around 3rd ..... I'm at the point, and move towards 3blx as the throw comes in from left center to the inside of the line and it's looking like a swipe tag which it is, ....R2 dodges the tag, (swipe misses) ....his left hand reaches for home (head first) it misses, and he reaches back .... me" NO TAG, NO TAG, safe!" My back is to Pete's dugout and I hear "blue ...he's GOT TO BE out of the baseline" ....I check the field, play is relaxed, I turn and Pete's coming towards me ... I call time, and give him the courtesy to discuss it .... he says it again ...., I say ..."Pete, his path to the plate and his move to avoid the tag........... BOOM, he cuts me off ..... shakes his head and says NO, NO, NO, NO, ...turns his back to me and walks away!" Now, ...me, usually being VERY thick skinned is jaded from the earlier escapade with him and the other coach, and I say .... "Pete, ...don't come out here to discuss a play with me, then when I give you the respect to discuss it , turn your back on me! He says ...."that's ok, we just saw that play differently blue", ...and continues to the dugout (trying to look like the "good guy" to the crowd). Once he's about there, he turns again ... "hes' got to be out of the baseline there" .... "no he doesn't Pete, he re-creates his own path once a tag is made" .... he replies, .... there's a baseline there, .....I said "YES, ..... HIS BASELINE that HE creates" ....he drops his head and it's over. Now, ...I have no issue with him talking to me about my call and what I had, but don't come out to discuss something with me and then 3 words into my version, turn your back and walk away from me! Have you ever had a coach do that to you? You all probably have, I haven't, and boy that pissed me off!! Must have been the heat! At the end of the day, Pete is one of those "if the call goes my way I"m fine" type of guys .... Sorry for the rant, but wanted to share ........
