Summer league HS freshman game, not the greatest quality of play but not the worst. I am PU, bases loaded. Middle inning, there had been a couple goofy plays (throwing errors, dropped balls by 1B, etc). I thought but wasn't sure there were 0 outs but the def coach yells out 1 out. Before I had a chance to check with partner, pitcher starts his motion and I get set. Batter hits a pop fly, runners start then go back, F4 makes the catch and doubles off R2, who broke for 3B and didn't look back. Both teams head to the dugouts without delay, just like the end of any inning. At this point I'm thinking that it was just me, I must have missed the 1st out or something. After the other team's pitcher had started his wamups, BU comes up to me and says "Hey, I only had 2 outs, what did you have?". Uh oh... We talk about it a bit and wonder if it can be undone. Right or wrong, since no one said anything or even hinted about it, we decide to just 'move on'. The pitcher finishes his warmups and we're getting ready. Just then, the previous offensive HC comes up and says "hey, weren't there only two outs? My R3 touched home - shouldn't his run count?". He wasn't angry in any way, just curious. I have no idea what to really answer, so I told the truth: I wasn't sure but it didn't seem that we could unring the bell once everybody had been in their dugouts and the next half inning was about to start. Hey, it's summer. But what WOULD be the right thing to do here? Is it abandonment by the other runners who went to their dugout? Can that run possibly score? Is it our obligation to hold up the teams from leaving the field till we're sure? Given the circumstances and the fact that the team that wanted the score was way ahead, it was no big deal - but I can see how it could have been. Short of the obvious (knowing the count and not losing track), what could have been done better here?
