It really grinds my gears when a plate umpire punches a batter out when he swings. And after a strike 3 looking, he signals it the same way as strike 1&2

Play at first and the 1B comes off the bag, misses the swipe tag and the runner misses the base. I automatically give the safe call. Then the 1B tags the BR before he touches 1st and I call him out. Coach comes out and argues blah blah. Then my partner, who is much older, tells me I shouldn't have signaled safe initially. I was confident I was correct. What's the call?
