  1. If he called time, I missed it. But I’m not too worried about what’s happening in the video but more what would you call a play if a batter was outside of the batter’s box and was hit by a pitch. Would he get first base? Would he be given a ball? Would he be out for interference? Would it be something else?
  2. So I saw this video on Instagram last night where the batter tried to call time while the pitcher was in motion, stepped completely out of the box, and got hit by the pitch. Ignore the fact that it looked completely intentional, but let’s say this happened on accident. What would be the call? My initial thought would that it would be a dead-ball ball call, similar to a swinging hit by pitch. My other thought would be that it was interference and the batter is out and everyone returns to their original base. I wouldn’t be surprised if I am completely wrong on this, but I can’t manage to find anything about it in any rule book, and I’m curious as to what the call would be. Here is the video... https://ftw.usatoday.com/2018/03/brayden-carey-east-coweta-georgia-high-school-baseball-hit-by-pitch-video-wheeler-out-of-box Thanks!!
  3. I recently purchased the new New Balance base shoes and I was wondering if anyone has used any waterproof spray to keep the mud, dirt, and water off of their shoes and if it worked. I see videos on Facebook where everything they throw at something just rolls right off. It seemed too good to be true after reading some reviews. I am curious to know if you guys have used anything that I could give a try so I can finally start using these shoes. Thanks!!
  4. That is my biggest concern when it comes to the New Balance shoes. I am going to order them and one pair of turf shoes to see which I like.
  5. I looked at those after seeing them on ump-attire. The reviews said that the traction was not so great. Definitely could see myself slipping on damp water with those.

  9. So what do you wear now?
  10. These are the new turf shoes ump-attire offers. Most likely used by football officials... https://www.ump-attire.com/Baseball-Umpire-Equipment/Gear-Footwear/Base-Plate-Shoes/UA-TRAINER_Under-Armour-Ultimate-Turf-Trainer-Shoes https://www.ump-attire.com/Baseball-Umpire-Equipment/Gear-Footwear/Base-Plate-Shoes/AD-SPEED3SL_Adidas-Speed-Trainer-30-SL-Black-Silver-Field-Shoes https://www.ump-attire.com/Baseball-Umpire-Equipment/Gear-Footwear/Base-Plate-Shoes/T4040SK4_New-Balance-Turf-4040v4-Elements-Shoes-Black-White The Adidas shoes look like they have zero traction at all. The Under Armour is hard to tell with the pattern. The New Balance looks similar to what the bottom of my old New Balance looks like.
  11. I am currently in the market to replace my first umpire shoes after about 8 years of use. I have the old New Balance shoes. I am looking at either getting the new New Balance base shoes or one of the many new turf shoes that are on ump-attire. The only reason I am looking at turf shoes is because the new New Balance shoes look like they would be a nightmare to keep clean with all that mesh on them. I have talked to a few people that have them and they say it takes a bit longer to clean them and they can't just cover it in scrubbing bubbles anymore. Has anyone ever used turf shoes on a dirt and grass field and if you did, how was the traction on them? Ultimately, what would you guys recommend?
  12. Yea I'd probably only be able to wear it while I'm at school. Most of the guys I work with, coaches and umpires, are professors themselves. Back home you have to match with your partner, unless the plate wants to do his own. A friend of mine ordered the camo shirts from TOC (took forever to get them, shocking...) for surprise going away game for a former air force umpire who had one...he loved it! And don't worry, I get plenty of grief for being so young, especially when I work a 55+ men's league game! I would think a UVA fan would keep quiet after that 52-10 beat down last week
  13. Haha, the only reason I am looking for one is because it's a school color (Virginia Tech). I am planning on putting the school logo on it and a few other things for the games down here. We do games by ourselves down here so they don't care what color shirt we wear.
  14. Recently I have been searching high and low for a maroon umpire shirt. My only luck was with The Official's Choice, and we all know how amazing their customer support is. I messaged someone on eBay selling one and he said he got his from TOC as well. If anyone knows of anyone who is selling them please let me know. Thanks!
  15. Not quite sure what you mean.
  16. So I just want to share a little story with you guys about a game I did this past Saturday. This was a 13+ Travel game by the way. So it was bases loaded, 2 outs, and the batter hit the ball to the first baseman. Somehow R3 makes it home before the play at first was made. So back to the play, the ball was hit in front of the bag and the first baseman fielded it and applied the tag to get the runner out. So the one coach comes out saying that the run scored, which we all know is not true because it was a force play. This coach believed with all his heart that a tag play didn't count as a force out. Then he went on to tell us that on a dropped 3rd strike if the catcher goes to tag the runner for the 3rd out and the run comes across before the tag, the run scored. He said 5 other umpires told him that, surprising you had that situation that many times. Sometimes it amazes me how little these coaches know about the game.
  17. Yea I can spend around $60 to about $120ish. And I always make sure I buy the best for the long run, that's why I come here to ask about masks!
  18. Awesome thanks for the help!
  19. Hey guys, so I am currently looking at purchasing a new mask/helmet since my old one is getting old. I previously used my old catchers' mask from when I used to play baseball so I am used to having a hockey style helmet. My fellow umpires that I work with have been suggesting I look into getting the Diamond ix3 mask and I have heard good things about them. I have also been looking at the Diamond DCH-EDGE Umpire Helmet and I am wondering if any of you guys have had any experience with it or heard anything about its performance. Any info on either of the two masks would be great!
  20. Hey guys, I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone. My name is Patrick Arnold and I am an umpire from Chantilly, Virginia. I've spent the past 4 years umpiring Little League baseball and this will be my first year umpiring high school and up. I'm eager to continue my umpire career and learn a lot from you guys!
