  1. ok..here's is the deal... The HP umpire called it a HBP, when it was in fact a batted ball, because he ( HP ) called it HBP, we can't assume the batter would have been thrown out. In this play we should leave the ball in play, the the defense make a play, then if you don't have replay you might have to get together and make a ruling ( which is ok)...

this play is a do over, batter come back with the same count.

SLow down your timing and let things play out. some of our schools have replay, i just had this exact play happen 2 weekends ago and we went to replay, turns out it did hit the knob..ball rolled foul, so no harm no foul...LOL.

here is a great tip for HP umpires, when the batter steps in the box, look at his hands and see how he is holding the bat. if they choke up, then its a good chance it hits the knob, if they are wrapping their finger around the knob, well, it's a good chance it hit the hand.

I just saw a press conference with the Campbell Coach (Class act). He stated his review was about the ECU HC talking to his team during the initial review and him being out of offensive charged conferences. He admitted he was hoping it would keep Jake Washer off the field.

Watching Game 2 of my ECU Pirates vs Campbell Camels last night. There was a review I found myself questioning. Not the calls mind you; the need to go to review.

Bottom of the 8th, one out, bases loaded ECU ahead 8-3 or something like that. Batter hits a chopper to F3.  Play at the plate the plate up was all over it and it wasn't a questionable call. As the biggest ECU homer I can say without my umpiring cap on, The ECU runner was out no question. Bur the coach appealed and they went to reply.

As I've mentioned I've been away and I didn't attend the NCAA clinic for 2019, so...

Question 1 Must they go to replay when asked? Can't they say, "No coach, I've got this and I'm 100% confident in my call." Or is that a directive from above for this level?

Then, while the PU and the UIC had the headphones on, the Campbell coach came out and spoke to U2.

The initial call on the play at the plate was confirmed (duh), now it gets interesting... Campbell wants interference on the BR (this was the speculation of the commentators, but the only thing that made sense)

The BR, after hitting the chopper to F3, was running inside the foul line. I'll say maybe as much as 3 feet inside.  F3 fielded the ball pretty close to what I'd call the 2-man B position, but more to the 1st base side. So there first could have been no RLI since it was a ball coming from F3 to F2. Then, even being 3 feet in fair territory he couldn't have interfered with the throw home if he tried. IMO for me to call interference in that situation he's going to have to throw himself at the thrown ball, but he was running towards first, nothing special.  While the PU has the play at the plate, he could have easily recognized there was no interference as F3 was fielding and U1 is also there who can follow the play after PU has to go attend to the plate.

Back to question 1; must they go to replay when asked?

Then this was even more of a no-brainer I think the umps could have just gotten together on and determined without replay.

But I will say this all the umps in the Greenville Regional did a great job. I can actually only think of one call and it was a pitch I said "oooh" to myself on.  But seven games  ( I watched all 5 of the ECU games and parts of the other 2) and only 1 pitch I questioned from the comfort of my couch at home or desk at work, that's beyond fabulous. Add to that I saw a few of them smiling laughing with each other, the players and coaches. Highest cudos to the guys working that regional they not only were fabulous but they were having fun too.

All scoring play are free replays, so the coach might have asked for, possible OBS.

RLI doesnt have to come from the PLate area.. the throw can come from wherever.. so yes there could have been RLI.

    1. Yes we must... only on things that are reviewable. no we Umps cant just get together when we have replay and say " it's all good"... all scoring plays are free replays... so why not take 30sec to go and look.

Do I have this right? The umpire who started inside at C is "U3" for purposes of this thread? And with a base hit, he's got plays on R1 at 2nd and 3rd bases, R2 at 3rd base, and BR at 3rd base? And all U1 has to get right is to follow the batter runner into second for this play? PU stays home, but has the touch of R1 at third base?

    for the purposes of everything.. Pu ( plate Umpire ) U1 ( 1stbase umpire ) U3 ( 3rd base umpire) and U2 ( 2nd base umpire )  in the 3 umpire system U3 is and always will be U3

but the rest of your scenario is right

Haven't seen that yet but if a runner violated the NCAA FPSR but does not alter the play because the fielder knew enough to get out of the way, knowing that it is rarely called in his games, should the violation be called as the fielder altered his play before the runner could effect him.

I did see this on Samford FSU tonite:

I'm sure you can see the video live on some venue. It was later in the game. They got the DP so no harm no foul.

This is so wrong and part of the problem today... the successful attempt of the double play has no bearing what so ever.. We need across the US to start calling it everywhere.

But MLB can move there if the flight of the ball takes them into the path. The "in the ac of fielding" caveat. FED has no such provision. That's why I say we need to see exactly how NCAA writes it.

personally, just like now.. if the flight takes the Catcher's into the runners path, then its just nothing

This too, seems to say they're aligning more with FED. Guess it will depend on the actual wording, and interps, as noumpere has stated.

I think More MLB.. the catchers in MLB cant block the base till they have the ball.

If I have two sets that last two years or one set that lasts one year, they still lasted the same amount of time. With that being said, I do have another set that's basically brand new but I don't wear them when I'm working all of these games. I'd rather just wear out a set and keep the other looking 100%.

HUH.. i dont work very many games.. maybe 60 D1 games.. I dont work many summer game games , maybe 10-15.... so all year maybe 70 games....but i still rotate, my spandex pants are 2 yrs old and i have poly wools that are 8 yrs old.. you cant tell.

I kind of figured this was the case for college baseball. What I really wanna know is about the minor leagues. I guess I could always just buy another pair of NB if I end up being selected.

I know this depends on your association because I have heard otherwise.

Nope... they cant require you to buy a certain brand..thats Illegal....I work in some pretty good college baseball conferences, and we "are not required to buy a certain brand"

Usually the only recommendations/mandates are on pants, shirts, and jackets so everyone matches exactly.  I've seen D1 crews wearing Nike, UA, and New Balance all at the same time. It is all personal preference and if they look professional. Any of those that you have named will work fine.

Pants arent even required to match.. Some have Polywools, some have the Poly spandex, some have Gerry davis.
