I've just come back to umpiring after taking a break for about 15 years. I moved to a few different cities in that time and every time I picked up my box of ump gear I said "You know, I should get back into that." I finally did it this season.
In my game tonight, the second game I've worked in 15 years, suffice it to say it wasn't my best. I was trying and admittedly made a few blunders, and once coaches and parents decide they don't like the umpire there's no changing their minds.
In about the fourth inning a batter made a weak swing at a pitch and let the bat go (accidentally, I'm sure). It hit me on the left shoulder and was easily absorbed by my chest protector. One of the parents who had been ragging on me cheered the kid for it. Some games you just can't win...
