Saturday I was working 12U games for a fund raising tournament to get a team to Cooperstown All Star Village this summer.
R2 and batter fouls off a pitch that leaves the field.
F2 is handed a ball and throws it to F1.
F1 straddles the rubber and batter gets set in the box.
Before engaging the rubber, and before I say Play, F1 turns and attempts to pick off R2.
Ball sails into center field and R2 takes off, rounds 3B while I am now standing on the plate with my arms raised yelling Time the ball is not in play. When R2 stops I send him back to 2B.
Manager in 3B coaching box, yells out asking why was the ball not in play?
Before I could even answer the TD who was behind the backstop yells out, "The last pitch was a foul and the ball was never put back in play".
The team that would have scored the run was also from the TD's organization and R2 was his son.
There was nothing else said or asked.
This is a prime example of why you must always put the ball back in play, even if your working 1 man mechanics.
