3:03-Any player that is not in the line-up can be used as a courtesy runner for the pitcher or catcher at any time. Note: Rule applies for all levels of play Boys and Majors. 3:03(-Free substitutions shall be allowed as defined herein: Any of the nine starting players may be withdrawn from the game by being replaced by legal substitutes and then reenter the game one time only. In the event that an illegal substitution is made, the offending player shall be replaced with a legal substitute upon the discovery of the infraction by the umpire, Dixie official, official scorer or either opposing manager. All plays occurring prior to the discovery of the illegal substitution shall be official. An illegal substitution is not to be confused with an ineligible player, an ineligible pitcher or batting out of turn. COURTESY RUNNER- RULE CLARIFICATION 1. At any time, the team at bat may use courtesy runners for the pitcher and/or the catcher. 2. The same individual may not be used for both positions (pitcher and catcher) during the game. 3. Neither the pitcher nor the catcher will be required to leave the game under such circumstances. The use of the courtesy runner does not constitute player participation/substitution; therefore, the current free substitution rule remains intact in its entirety. 4. Players listed in the official starting lineup are ineligible to serve as courtesy runners. 5. Any substitute that is replaced by a starter (free substitution rule) can either assume or resume the opportunity to serve as a courtesy runner. 6. The umpire-in-chief and the official scorer are to be notified of courtesy runner participation. 7. A player who violates the courtesy-runner rule is considered to be an ineligible player. The player and the manager are penalized by rule as found in section 8.96 (2006-07 Official Playing Rules) of local league and tournament rules. Based on the rule above what is the call if a BR reaches first that is not the F1 or F2 and the OC says I want to courtesy run for Johnny because he is going to pitch when we come out on defense and when they come out on defesne he goes with his original line up :P

Ok need some help with a sitch, R1 on first (OBR) F1 balks but delivers pitch BR hits ground ball to right side that hits R1 as he is advancing to 2nd. Is R1 out by being hit by batted ball or is the award 2nd base and BR return to HP??

How high does the ball have to be to be called IF? Some coaches argue about this, I just say in my judgement it was IF.

Thanks, I thought there was a sitch where runner was out, just did not remember. Luckily this sitch had no bearing on outcome of game.

I had a sitch the other night R1 on 2nd no outs, R1 goes on the pitch F2 comes up to throw to 3rd. Batter steps out of bax with on foot to see what is happening at 3rd, F2 on the throw hits batter in back of the helmet. I call BI R1 out continue play. They are playing under OBR, any help on BI situations would be appreciated. Did I get this right?

In the league where I ump we use OBR, as PU and BU what is the proper mechanic for signaling a balk. I have seen guys forever as PU throw both hands in air and step from behind the plate screaming balk and BU do the same throwing hands in air screaming balk. The problem as I see it is this is not a dead ball and as PU you still need to call the pitch if deliverd and as either PU or BU when you raise both hands you are confusing the defense as this is the mechanic for time or dead ball and we still have a live ball.

In the league where I umpire there is a coach who is trying everything in the book. I have not had the pleasure of doing one of his games but would really like to. This is what he pulled on Teusday night, I told PU after game balk all the way. Here is the sitch, R1 at 2nd F1 is stradle the rubber, comes to set position while not in contact with rubber R1 takes big lead F1 turns to pick off PU calls Balk, the show started then. I told PU after game F1 cannot decieve the runner in this manner, he called Balk for seperation of hands. Just need some feed back from the vetrans to help with this one. Thanks

BrianC14, no I know better than that one, the fact is this was an 11-12 yr old game and F1 was even good enough to raise the ball off the bag after the tag and show it to me. My partner said with your hand on top of the ball like that there was no contro ie catch/trap but that was not the case I was impressed by him showing me the ball. I ask my partner if you have bases loaded and BR bunts and the ball has back spin that puts it on home plate are you not going to call the force out when F2 picks up the ball, he said no, imo you have to have control to pick it up. I enjoy the site for this reason there is always something to learn. Thanks for the help from all.

Last night had a sitch where I was in A ground ball to F3, F3 & F1 end up at the same place for the ball. F1 comes up with the ball and crawls to the bag, has the ball in his bare hand touches the bag with the ball two steps ahead of BR, I got an out. After three outs my partner says I missed it this is not an out, says there is no way F1 had control of the ball with his hand on top of it. Says it is in the book but no to my rookie knowledge, can someone help with this, did I get it right or blow it. I think before I call safe on this I need some ammo for an angre coach. Thanks
