I'm looking for clarity on whether a position player (or anyone other than the manager, really) can issue an intentional walk by using the signal to do so (not by throwing 4 pitches intentionally out of the zone).
The MLB rules seem to only mention a manager making this call, but recently, Gerritt Cole seemed to have issued an IBB, though it's unclear if Aaron Boone had to gesture to the umpire that he was in fact making the call.
While I'm not suggesting it matters who called for it, I am genuinely curious.. is it legal per the MLB rules for anyone but the manager to call for an IBB?
