Can a catcher simply pick up a dropped 3rd strike and step on home plate for the out? Or does he have to tag or throw out the batter/runner? College umpire doing little league today said it must be batter/runner to get the out. Also, is it different in other rule sets such as FED, college, MLB? Thanks

I can't find the rule that states a player cannot come into the game from the bench to the pitcher position. Does that rule exist and if so what rule is it? I looked through rule 8 and I don't see it. Thanks

Little League juniors. Home team manager goes out to the mound with his starting pitcher after the top of 1st inning is retired to get him set up to pitch. Is that a charged mound visit? Thanks!

Little League majors. R1, R2, 2 outs. Plate umpire signals dropped 3rd strike on a pitch that the catcher trapped with the ball hitting the dirt before the ball was caught. The catcher throws the ball out to right field. As this is going on the coach on defense runs onto the infield yelling that the ball was caught causing the runners to freeze. Aside from ejecting the manager, what award would the base runners receive? Thanks

Is that because he was in the middle of his at bat with an active 2-2 count?

The player hit in the face was "married" to another player. Wouldn't that be a legal sub?

Juniors division bat 9. There were 2 injury substitutions. First one was a sub came in for a starter in the 3rd inning. The sub got one at bat and played one inning in the field when he pulled a hamstring and couldn't run any more. The starting player he came in for came back in the game for him. Is that a legal substitution since the injured player did not complete his 6 consecutive outs? Next, A starting player fouled the ball off of his face with a 2 and 2 count in the fifth inning resulting in a concussion. He and his sub had already met their minimum play requirements so does the sub simply come back in for him and inherit the count? Thanks

No I did not as my team was being clobbered by the other team and I wanted to show sportsmanship in a game we could not win.

Little League juniors TOC game. R2 has a huge jump on steeling 3rd base. He is about 10 feet away from 3rd when the batter is hit by pitch. PU ruled dead ball, batter awarded 1st and R2 given 3rd because he was over half way there. My team is on defense. I argued, unsuccessfully, that R2 should return to 2nd because it was a dead ball. What is the correct call? Thanks

I was just a spectator at this game, but I do a lot of umpiring for this league. What I saw was the players moving as they should with 2 outs and F4 making the attempt at catching the ball and flat dropping it. I would have ruled all runners advance 1 base and the batter/runner safe at first.

Yes. The runners started moving when the ball was hit.

Little League minors game. Bases loaded 2 outs. Batter hits a pop up behind the mound that is a routine catch. The umpire incorrectly yells "infield fly, batters out!" F4 drops the ball, but the inning is over because the umpire called the batter out. The game proceeds to the next inning. What action should the manager have taken? And what can the umpire do to correct the mistake. In this game, the inexperienced manager did nothing. We discussed options with the umpire after the game from calling a no pitch and resetting or advancing all runners 1 base. At least we had good sportsmanship with no brutal attacks at the umpire.

Currently, we have a game suspended because of darkness. Top of the 6th no outs and the visiting team just took the lead 20-19. They were down 19-13 to start the inning. I believe the game should be resumed just as it was when the game was suspended, but district 47 says it reverts back to the start of the 6th. Page 141 of the 2018 rule book says it shall be resumed at the exact point where it left off. Am I missing a rule that states differently?

Thanks for the reply! I'm a newer umpire doing my first all stars and my goal is to get it right. I called it as incidental contact with no obstruction, no interference and the manager on the defense was upset and asked me to ask the BU for help. He is a 16 year old junior umpire and not able to give much input. Its tough here getting umpires to handle all of the games.

Little League minors 10 year olds. Runner going in to 3rd base at the same time the ball is coming in from center field. F5 is positioned next to the bag on the outfield side leaving a lane for the runner. The ball comes in over the bag so F5 reaches for the ball and the runner hits his arm causing the ball to get away. Would that be RI?

Little League has a 5 runs per inning rule for minors 9/10 year olds.

District 47 is very strict on managers, coaches, and players not talking to anyone off the field probably to be ready for tournament games. The managers are NOT allowed to talk to the score keeper. All questions go through the PU. The 2 problems here is that the official pitch counter sat on the visiting side and the umpires did not know that the VT has the official pitch count in district 47. It should be a requirement to check counts and books every 1/2 inning.

Here's a situation that happened recently in 12u Little League. The HT ace pitcher reaches 87 pitches and pitches to another batter and retires the batter for the 3rd out to end the inning. The HT asks pitch count to the PU previous to reaching the max 85 and the PU asks the official score keeper from the HT and is given 82 pitches. The problem is that the VT has the official pitch count which is at 87 pitches. How do you move forward? It seems like the HT did the right thing by asking the PU, but the PU did not know that the VT has the official pitch count. Thanks

Little League. There's a scared batter facing a pitcher who throws high velocity. He bails out of the batters box as the pitcher is releasing the ball. Is it balls and strikes as usual or is he out for leaving the box?

Well, the game was restarted much to the chagrin of the visiting manager, but the pitcher's pitch count was not reset because the pitch count is a safety issue not allowing a 12 year old to exceed 85 pitches in a game.

Here's one I would have never thought could happen! Little League baseball 12 year old and under majors. The game starts with the home team pitcher being given the Safe-T balls that the Tee ball kids use. The pitcher walks the first 2 batters then complains that the balls are wrong. Would the game continue using the correct balls or does the game need to start over? It was a new umpire in his 3rd game and the home team manager asked to restart the game from the beginning.

The batter swung at a pitch and the ball hit both the knob of the bat and the batter's hand. The ball went into fair territory. Would that be treated like a regular hit? Thanks
