    Bases Awarded

College wood bat league, using NCAA rule set. Ball hit to third base, ball glances off the third baseman's glove and slowly rolls toward fence . BR reaches 1st base, then the ball finds the only hole under the fence that we had observed in our pregame walkaround. Because the runner had acquired first base prior to the ball going out of play, I awarded third base. Was that correct?

    Interference?

Thanks for the reply. We were split about 50/50 on this one.

    Interference?

Last night at our Association meeting we had a discussion about the following situation, and I would appreciate some input: R1, no outs, batter hits ball to F4 who throws the ball to F6 for the start of a double play. F6 tags the bag and throws towards 1st base where the runner is hit in the chest with the ball, approximately 2/3rds the way between 1st and 2nd, running in the baseline. What do we have?
  4. I have to second LMSANS post, of coming off as a harda$$, but whether I was playing or coaching, the "in the vicinity play" was one thing that really got me going. I guess I have carried that philosophy over into my umpiring. It's not that I want to interject myself into the game, but rather I want a strike over the plate and in the zone as well as the defense to step on on the bag and stay on the bag. Having said that, in Pete's sit #1, I have R1 safe at 2nd and an out at 1st because I actually saw F6 missed the bag (one of the base coaches could/should have seen this too). I'm also making no bones about the call at 2nd, so everyone's going to know the call, and R1 had better not be giving up (something else I didn't much care for as a player or a coach). I feel sit#2, is a little different scenario because the umpire/s were blocked from actually seeing what occurred. But in this situation I'm reading what both the offense and defense is doing. This will usually tell what transpired, usually.
  5. Hi my name is Terry, I'm 50 years old and I started umpiring HS ball in our local Association, in 2001. Up until that time I had umpired and coached in our local SB, LL and BR organization called Seaside Kids for nearly 20 years. Originally coaching was my main spring and summer activity. I finally realized that with everything else that was going on, I couldn't devote as much time as needed to coach the way I wanted. Yet, I still wanted/needed to stay tied to the kids and the game. So when I was approached by one of the umpires from the local Association, I said I would give it a try. Loving it ever since. Since 2001, I've had a chance to umpire BR District, State and Regional games, college level summer baseball and HS playoffs and last spring I was part of a three man crew that worked one of the State championship games. Which was a great experience, working with two other umpires from different parts of the State and Associations. I continue to work at learning and bettering my officiating skills. I have been an avid reader of several sites similar to this one over the past 18 months. I find these sites to be very informative. I look forward to our discussions. TLH
