  1. Sorry for bumping this. My mistake, I haven't been on here in years. For some reason I thought bumping the thread was a good idea. Please lock this. I'm sorry my second sentence did not have a semicolon by the way.
  2. Yea, I really didn't know how to react to that statement. Was that really necessary?
  3. Thank you.
  4. Um, I was posting on this thread because I haven't posted on here since I started this thread. Just wanted to give an update on how I was doing umpiring wise.
  5. Kind of resurrecting this thread, but I havent been on here since I last posted in this thread. I have moved past just calling 9/10 games. Last year I started working JV and freshman high school games, which was kind of weird at first because only a few years ago I was playing at that level. Hopefully this year I can continue working JV and hopefully get a cup a coffee shot at Varsity in the near future. However I will always find time to work the lower levels. And also, before I forget: I umpired a game a few days after this post was made and the coach in the OP was on one of the teams. Gave me the same crap from before. Warned him, he continued, so I ejected him. Again, sorry if I was bumping and old thread,
  6. Thank you everyone for your comments. I hope I can contribute to this site.
  7. I"m not saying 9u is boring, it's just that when you are the base umpire during a walk-a-thon it's extremely boring. I love doing the younger levels. I'm sorry for the bad first impression on here .
  8. This will be my 2nd year umpiring. I"m 17.
  9. Sorry, by "certified" I meant being a member of our association and having taken all the courses provided by the association.
  10. That is a problem of mine. I often avoid conflict with coaches unless they are face to face yelling at me. I have to be more assertive.
  11. No according to the coaches that know him he has been umping for 5 years. I believe he was nervous to make his own calls, he would often wait to hear the reaction of the coaches to make calls. And for his "out" signal, well you can imagine that created a lot of confusion.
  12. Thats what I was thinking, just wanted to get peoples input.
  13. I'm kicking myself just thinking about it... 9/10 game. Runner on 1st with 1 out. BR singles up the middle, R1 is not running hard, CF throws to 2nd for force out, throw just beats him. I call him out. The head coach, who was coaching 1st, starts yelling "That's crap. Tie goes to the runner!" I ignored him and proceeded onto the next inning. Mind you this guy had been loudly mumbling under his breath in between innings about how the game should be called "both ways":blah
  14. Hi guys. I have been a longtime lurker here. I have the courage now to post in here. OK now on to the topic: Have you guys ever had a flat out terrible partner? Last week, I was assigned a 9u game that was supposed to be solo, but for some reason another umpire showed up. We decided to split the fee, he took PU while I was BU. I'll list off the reasons why this was a terrible night in general to go along with my partner's ineptitude... 1. It was a 9u game with two umpires. You imagine the boredom I was going through. 2. Partner always messed up the count. One time he announced the count as 3-1 to a batter who had not even seen a pitch yet. 3. Zone for him was out of whack. He would call pitches literally... literally right down the middle a ball while a pitch up to the top of the helmet was a strike. 4. His mechanic for out was the "safe" sign. Now, I hate to critique other umpires this way, because I'm far from perfect. But this guy was supposed to be a certified umpire. I did not talk to him about it after the game, because I was not sure what to tell him. I did not want to be an ass, or sugar-coat it for him either. What advice do you guys have for dealing with a bad parter?
