umpstu Posted October 28, 2025 Report Posted October 28, 2025 What mask and pads was Mark Wegner wearing last night? And 609 pitches, holy smokes. Quote
orangebird Posted October 28, 2025 Report Posted October 28, 2025 No idea about the pads, but his mask seems like Force3 unless I missed Wilson/All-Star coming up with a springs design https://www.gettyimages.com/search/2/image?family=editorial&phrase=mark wegner Quote

SeeingEyeDog Posted October 29, 2025 Report Posted October 29, 2025 When I first stepped into the cage as a rookie to learn how to call pitches, I called my strikes the way Wegner does. Stay down, call strike, come up...and THEN point it. I did this one time and then my instructor immediately stopped the session and told me not to do that. We are to "marry" our verbal with our mechanic. And ever since then, that's what I do. My strike verbal and mechanic are done at the same time. I spoke with a brother yesterday who was in last year's class at Wendelstedt. They of course teach the hammer at pro school however, they also teach hammering and verbalizing the strike call at the same time. I've never had a situation on the field where players didn't know what I called on the last pitch, thought it was a ball, started for the next base and were tagged out...correlation? Causation? ~Dawg 1 Quote

Wegner (#14) and Emil Jimenez (#82) are the only Umpires to wear Force3 Defender TMs. In the past, Wegner has worn re-labeled pads (with yellow W so as to receive the payoff / “hush” money), but the ones worn for his postseason rig (which has to support a camera, transmitter, and battery pack) are, as @JSam21 notes, All-Star LUC-Mags. You can’t hide the center-split tabs… which are unused on a Defender. 3 Quote
