This post also applies to high school.  When the game is over, leave immediately.  I believe these umpires made a serious mistake by returning to the field after they were apparently leaving.

Since they hadn't actually left the field I thought they did the right thing by pulling out the pen and paper and taking down numbers. Now, what I do think was stupid was to hop in the middle of it trying to stop that dumb ass student who was running on the field looking to make a name for himself. What if that kid was packing or took a swing at the umpire? That was dumb.

Nope. What they did is the opposite of what we have been trained to do--especially when we have video at our disposal.

I agree. On one hand you have video to identify numbers, maybe, because the video wasnt that great, IMHO. On the other hand, other than a full blown sprint off of the field, they were there when it started and under their purview. In fact, the U1(?) was jogging off of the field.

It would be interesting to know if any displanary action would be on the umps if they did leave even though they were on the field when it started

What is the college protocol for situations like this? The umpires were still on the field. Are you instructed to leave?

Just curious as I don't call college.

There wouldn’t have been; nothing good comes from U (umpires) staying, once the game is over. In fact, their/your/our presence may instigate, intensify, or embroil the participants even more. God forbid if one of us ever gets seriously injured if we try to “break it (a fight) up”, let alone get accused of antagonizing or instigating further conflict.

Even if they (simply) loiter around, and “take names & numbers”, by staying, somebody will get incensed, and will be tempted to lash out, either in present time, or in post-action, with something akin to, “Well why didn’t you (they) do something (to stop it)??!!”

Do you know the phrase, “Silence cannot be misquoted”?
Absence cannot be misinterpreted.

JSU was just a few minutes from my house when I lived there; shameful.

I understand their inclination to go back and capture numbers, and it appears they have some quick debate over it.  However, they may have technically still been in the confines, but I wouldn't consider that "on the field."  Keep on keeping on, IMO.

We mentally note the situation while we are getting out of there, getting to our off-field area, calling our conference coordinator, and aligning on who is going to retrieve, watch, and document the video.

So you do just basically leave.

I agree, I think that's a good way of handling it. No need to get in the middle of a brawl.

Thanks for the info.

Nice. Hadn't heard that one.

At work we have a saying to counter this, for those moments a decision is being made and we ask for feedback only to get crickets: "silence is assent"

Had that saying in the Air Force, too.
