It's called a uniform for a reason: a brief rant

Have worn a pink shirt once and that was to show support for a fellow umpire who had just lost his wife to cancer.  Since our organization is small, 21 umpires, she was good friends with all of the umpires. The shirts were purchased by a fellow umpire so we could surprise him. We also added two additional umpires to the game with the approval of the teams involved. Have not worn one since and hope I never have a reason to. Have a brother currently fighting rectal cancer. Cancer sucks!

I would actually expand that to all non-standard colors (black, light blue, and even Max's favorite--navy). I've gotten very positive comments when I've worn my red, or even borrowed a friend's white--zero issues in those games.

I like it--but it requires a shirt with a front pocket (I've seen some shirts that don't have the pocket).

My assn. isn't particular at all. it's just that other people are demanding that I have a shirt other than those three and get mad when I don't have it.

Here is the thing I would tell them. If you don’t care what they think about you wear what you want to wear and let them figure it out.  But better advice,

Hi all! It's been well over a year since my last post but I need to get something off my chest. I'm in my second year of umpiring and have been enjoying it more than ever. However, the seemingly minor issue of shirt color has repeatedly blown up when coordinating with my partners.

The association I'm a part of falls under the "as long as you match, you're fine" umbrella. Our standard colors are navy and light blue but some guys have entire wardrobes of shirts. To be clear, I have absolutely nothing against the folks who like to have two of every color, but I have repeatedly run into partners who get very snippy with me because I don't have a cream shirt or a red shirt or a grey shirt or whatever other color that they declare that we are to wear that day. Am I being unreasonable by only having the two basic colors? Currently, I own 6 shirts and it already feels like overkill. I don't see a reason why we need to have a million colors and variations. Personally, I would like to see my assn. switch to black and light blue, but that's a fight for another day.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Hey man. Here is my advice, continue doing what you’re doing. If they get mad then I would handle it how you would handle a coach. lol. Warn and then eject.😂😂😂

You make a very valid point.

However, as I’ve now pointed out now 3 times in this topic, if you want / expect / require us to wear your uniform, then you should provide it.

Now, to be fair, if you are able to and choose to maintain > 2 colors / styles of shirts (I have, what, 18+? Yeesh), you should not be disdainful or dismissive of those that can’t…

… or won’t, I suppose.

Everyone’s got their somethin’.

Our state patch is rectangular.  Wonder why they only have circular ones?

It sill works with other shapes - I just spent this weekend working American Legion with their ginormous rounded-corner rectangular patch using the patchlatch. That area is the only area that it adheres, but unless your patches are made of paper, they'll stay flat if you store them anywhere near properly.

Oh, you’d love me.

See, I'm okay with that list because you have everything and can go full chameleon. Personally, if I had the closet space in my dorm and my own car during the summer (my sister and I share when we're home from school) I'd probably end up getting a billion shirts for the hell of it. It just doesn't make practical sense to have more than a few colors.

Just for fun, my wardrobe is as follows:

  • Crappy navy from the clinic
  • Old school smitty light blue with RWB trim
  • Old school black
  • 2016 MLB black
  • 2016 MLB blue
  • Navy long sleeve (my absolute favorite)

What's the difference between "Crappy Navy" and long sleeve navy?....other than sleeve length

Yeah, don't see that one very often so I never picked it up.

PGF Softball uses that as their "brand" default (buy it from them with logo), but every PGF tournament I have worked allowed the standard softball powder (navy trim).

The “crappy navy” is the one they gave us (well, sold to us) at the clinic. I’m almost positive it’s the first result that pops up on Amazon when you type in “umpire shirt.” It does the job, but I’m definitely going to a navy Smitty next year. The long sleeve is a Smitty too.

It’s probably a no-name brand, or a Dalco, or a Cliff Keen. Heck, it might be an Adams. 😬 There’s no way it’s a “quality” brand, like Honigs, GerryDavis, or Smitty.

Why not cause a… ripple… by getting something from GerryDavis, or a style like this?

Oooooo… scary to TPTB and their status quo. Especially those in Ohio.

Don't tempt me. Considering many association handbooks just say "Navy blue" shirt, I cannot see any reason why someone wouldn't wear a navy shirt outside of the "traditional" style.

Ah gotcha. You’re talking quality not color. There’s some of us around here who aren’t real big fans of navy. No matter the fabric. 😁

The fabric does matter though.

The hideous sublimated Smitty shirts the NJSIAA requires are an embarrassment. The black version is of such poor quality that working the plate one game in one results in several white fabric pulls and fabric pills from where the velcro, buckles, or other pieces of protective wear come in contact with the quality materials of said shirts.

I choose black first when umpiring, but I will never were the HS version on any field outside the HS season.

Thank you. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one of my peers that uses the right logo (Legion, HS, or LL) on uniforms and hats for the games. This year for a travel ball 18U game I had a guy tell me "I'm wearing my Legion hat because it's the only black one I have."

Seriously?

Yup. Seriously.

So many amateur umpires (ab)use their uniform items (shirts, hats, jackets) simply because of miserly cheapness and laziness.

“Ya know, our state (*cough* Ohio! *cough*) requires us to get a new shirt every 2 years, so I may as well use it – or the previous one – for any/all games I do. Same goes for this hat! Ya know, they just don’t make hats like they used to, and this one from ______ (10) years ago still fits me, so why buy a new one?”

In fairness, if you’re running a state or private association, and desire / demand uniformity, then you should be providing the uniforms!

Ehh . . . I don't agree it is "simply because of miserly cheapness and laziness."  While the decision to spend money is certainly on us, I think alphabet organizations have a large role in this also.  People who do not want to take the avocation seriously will skate by as long as they are allowed to skate by.  If Veteran Vic is not getting an assignment because of his shirt, then he needs to be told that.  Don't tell him and he'll never fix it.  Keep giving him the cherry assignments and he definitely won't fix it.

Uniforms and profits are significant reasons I have been moving away from softball and more towards baseball.  In softball, too many of the orgs want you to register with them, pay them, and oh, by the way, you can only buy their unique uniform from them (and please by 3 or 4 variations!).  Naw, I'm good.  If the traditional softball umpire uniform (or an accepted variant) isn't good enough, neither am I.

Umpiring is not a cheap hobby to get into, so I can understand the inclination to not spend money.  I didn't have a large shirt selection for a long time because nobody in my area wore black, and my money was going back into my kids' sports.  Now, I am at a point that I am finally reinvesting.
