Just bad, all around. Coaches and Umpires get into a fight during LL Sectionals.

Holy crap!  This is out my way .... ish.

I'd seen this video on FB reels more than once today.  (Yes, I *know* I watch too many videos on there.  Shut up.)  I didn't realize until I followed the link from your post where it occurred.  I live on the coast of NC, and Wilson is about two hours in-land from here.

With the mask, the umpire had a decent right hand.

(And I believe my own mask would be defined as "boat anchor Wilson," @JonnyCat, thank you very much!)

At least you're ready for any unruly coaches that might come your way!

bump, to a shove, to using a mask... not looking good..

Guys do not resort to using a mask on someone ever unless they pull a bat you are now possibly using a "deadly weapon"

Im not saying go after anyone by any means either.  Just noting the escalation there.  NOT good at all.

And yes the coaches name should be out there as well.  They should actually both be charged

I saw it in a reel as well, then I saw someone post it in one of the umpire groups I'm in on FB and saw it was in our state. I'm yet to have anyone get in my face let alone touch me so I was a little surprised to see it so close to home. I've just been called the worst ump ever, (I need that shirt by the way, I saw it posted on here) I just hope that mom is sending me the plaque in the mail so I can hang it in the man cave.

why has the umpires name been outed but not the coaches name.

I believe I saw the coaches name in one of the video's I saw on this. I believe his alleged name is Chase (I don't remember the last name) but the poster claims the coach has been arrested before for domestic violence a couple years ago.

I wonder if PU is WAS on the short list for Williamsport…

Fixed it for you.

Love how the partner umpire just took a huge hand full of 'nope, I'm not getting in the middle of this!', and honestly, once the mask started swinging, I'm most likely doing the same thing. Once they all went to the ground, then I'm pulling coaches off my partner, but not when he is swinging to take heads off.

I saw that as well. I wonder how much of that was "Sigh. There goes Fred again."

If that's the case, then the LL background checks from now on need to include DV.

That's probably the best strategy, and one employed by hockey linesmen world-wide - wait until they stop swinging from being tired, or hit the ground.

another fight-apparently umpire and coach just last week. not LL or perfect game this time but grand slam's turn. guess that pitch changed the whole dynamics of making it to MLB (who, the player or the coach), 7th game of the WS situation. kid will not get that power 5 freebee for daddy/mommy now or that million dollar round draft spot. scouts are there packed to see these 9 year olds. oh well.

I know with the exception of the last post, this thread is 3 months old, but I'm surprised that no guidance was given along the way for guys who might honestly not know what to do in this situation.

Guys, the Coach was wrong. 1000%. He doesn't get to say,

"The fight started when he hit me ... all I did was give him a light shove."

The Coach is evidently a POS and has a DV charge, so he has no business coaching in this league in the first place.

BUT .............

He's also a LOT younger than the umpire, and he did not use a weapon, not even his fists, and we all know that cameras are EVERYWHERE these days.  The chance of this interaction at the plate NOT being captured on someone's cell phone or a GoPro cam is remote.  Almost none.

The umpire probably had a $250,000 lawsuit sitting in the palm of his hands if he had kept his cool.  He could have pursued it with all the vigor he deserved, then turned around and given the settlement money to LL Baseball, as a donation, and handled it all beautifully.  Instead, he looks worse than the coach in the end.  That coach would likely have been suspended for the remainder of the season, and likely not allowed to coach in that town for two more years if the DV charge is legit.

Taking a sloppy roundhouse pot shot at the Coach with his mask after his partner already stepped in was not only as cowardly as the Coach's shove, but downright stupid.  He didn't swing his mask once, in defense, but at least ten times, on offense.  I thought I was witnessing a fight between two 5th grade girls. In some counties, if the police had been called right then and there, they likely both would have been charged, cuffed, dragged to jail, and I'm not sure the umpire would "skate" after they watched the video of him using his mask as a weapon with not even a punch preceding it.

I happen to be a 3rd Dan in Shotokan, and I've never used it in my life outside of the Dojo, and it prepared me well for just such circumstances.  When we get into umpiring, we don't expect this to happen, but we all know it eventually could happen, and to appear to be the aggressor kills our fraternity's reputation.  The base umpire really did react almost like he had seen this scene before out of his partner, and he was smart enough to stay out of it.

BEAUTIFUL opportunity wasted.

Grand Slam . . . Mississippi . . . not surprised at all.

Eject, wait, walk off.  Getting them out of there is not our problem.  If they don't want to leave, we leave.  We cannot see from the video who actually started the physical altercation, but the umpire did not handle his business properly in what we do see.

I feel bad for the partner who also took a suspension, but I would bet dollars to donuts that he is fine with not working for that organization.

As for their "new policy" . . . lip service.  Paying customers may be asked not to come back for a couple of days; umpires get the heave-ho for a year.  Way to back the problem, Mike.

You want some guidance? If a coach pushes or even takes a swing at an umpire, the game is over by forfeit.  Period!

BigBlue, have you ever been pushed or bumped or blocked?  I have ... all three ... and I never forfeited a game over any of the three.  I ejected the guilty party, let the dust settle, gritted my teeth and bore the rest of the game, wrote a report, and moved on.  In one case the coach never coached again.  In one other case, the coach was fired (travel ball).  In the third case, the coach got enough people to say he was not intentionally blocking me from leaving, and they bought it, but still suspended him for one week.

I could have easily screwed up all three of these incidents if I had pushed back.
