SMH at Coaches

Behind the plate last night for a Legion Juniors game (16U). R1 steals 2nd and goes in standing up, arriving to the base just before the ball arrives. F2's throw takes F6 to the 1B side of the bag, but the tag is late. DTHC calls from the dugout, "he has to slide!" then says something about a "force play." I took nothing that coach said seriously for the rest of the game.

Why, praytell, do coaches think they know the rules when they obviously haven't read any rule book, let alone the one that covers the game currently being played?

Excuse my ignorance ...what is SMH??

We could have whole forum on stupid things coaches say.

Runner on third, ball four to batter skips thru to backstop, runner trots home...DTAC..pops out of dugout..."Wasn't that a walk, Blue...how does the runner score? "...bit lip to not tell him on magical unicorn!

Did it ever occur to you that a coach does know the rule, and he just wants to know if you know the rule?

And sometimes it works with rules lacking umps. We have some really good coaches with really good rule knowledge and you don't stand a chance unless you know the rules and can quote the rule snippet to them. And then we have other coaches. Assignors have to put the right umps with the right coaches.

Or worse, the umpire becomes the source – Patient Zero – of the malodorous misapplication of a rule, or makes-up-s#!t on site. I have termed this, “Viral Umpiring”. Why? Because when an umpire MSU (or misapplies a rule, without correction), how many adults are affected and afflicted, at least? 3 (if U is solo) or 4. These 4 adults now carry that forward, thinking that that is, in fact, the correct rule! That that turd sandwich is actually a porterhouse steak!

:shakehead:
No… I reside in the camp-of-thought that coaches don’t have original thoughts (no matter how idiotic-to-baseball they are), and that when we hear them regurgitate “rule interpretations” to us that are laughably wrong or idiotic, I (now) don't shame them…  I now inquire, “Which umpire told you that?!”

Hardly ever.  Instead of actually picking up a rules book and reading it, I believe some of their "knowledge" comes from watching MLB games and listening to the awful announcers as stated by Lindsay all too often. And what's even better is that they don't know there's a difference between LL, HS, college, pro, etc.

I have had to explain high school rules to coaches and players in other sports too. In soccer, you can add time in games under FIFA rules (most recreational and competitive games are played by FIFA rules), but high school and college games are played with a countdown clock that stops. This means that the game stops as soon as the clock hits 0, and the referee can only stop time, not add it, in a high school soccer game.

I am surprised by the lack of rules awareness that players and coaches often show.

Saw an example of this on Reddit (I know, I know). Someone posted a question about a runner (LL ruleset) that was called out because he purposefully removed his helmet--which was coming off anyway. The umpire called the runner out. And now that umpire has made the work harder for every umpire to follow undoing his "MSU."

Ugh. Hopefully there was more to the story. Both LL & NFHS cover this explicitly to (hopefully) avoid MSU over-reaction.

Someone did hop on the thread and state that neither the LL A.R. nor NFHS 1-5-1 support calling the runner out.

...And the comment was probably pretty much ignored....Like when broadcasters are given rules interpretations by ex umpires, or others with rules  knowledge, then continue on with their diatribe about how "that was a bad call".

One of my fondest memories of a couple of coaches were two guys that spent the whole game reliving every odd thing that happened during their season and asking me what was correct.  It started with some odd play the 1BC was recalling to me and apparently he liked the way I explained the correct ruling and possible reasons the umpire in that game may have got it wrong.  After that, they had something every inning.

At the end of the game, they thanked me for explaining it in a way that they could wrap their minds around.  I then issued them a challenge: You accepted my answers because you liked how I explained them.  NOW, you need to go grab the rule book and make sure I am right.  Just because you like it doesn't mean it is correct.

When we encounter these MSU situations, we need to not only set the record straight, but try to empathize and understand why the previous person got it wrong.  Then we can truly work to debunk the problem.
