Kids on 2nd and 3rd.   Wild pitch, 3rd scores. Kid on 2nd is half way to 3rd (roughly 30ft away) as the catcher throws to 3rd so he turns around and returns to 2nd.   Throw from catcher is high and fielded by LF who returns it to 3rd after runner is safely back to 2nd. Mind you hes a 185lb 10 yo so he doesnt turn on a dime.  He more loops around.  Ump calls him out of baseline for an out.    Says the throw to 3rd even though it was high and not caught by 3rd baseman was a play on the runner.    What do you think?

I think umpires in 10 y/o games are sometimes inexperienced and lacking rules knowledge. Seems to be the case here.

I also think the kid forgot about it 30 seconds after he got his pizza slice, orange wedges and juice box.

"Throw" "to third" "high" "not caught" "was a play" . . .

I'm thinking there is a significant key word missing in that umpire's justification . . . TAG?

The umpire or the player?  Both were likely kids.

Yes there was never an attempt to "tag"

the runner going back to 2nd nor a throw back to second.   We appealed but home plate ump did not see it and stood behind the ump that called it.  Was a momentum killer and not his only bad call.  Lol

If an ump literally uses this language you know they're inexperienced/lacking some knowledge.

Leaving the fact that there needs to be a tag attempt, the rule says "HIS base PATH".

Was this a day or night game? Even or odd date?

You know he got the call incorrect. When I was a UIC and an inexperienced umpire would make a call like this, I would typically get an email from the coach with a brief description of the event. The expectation was to use the play as a learning tool, since if this umpire is making this type of call, others may be as well. We would use these examples as learning tools to make everyone better.

Assuming this is  an organized league, chat with your UIC, not to call out the umpire and embarrass them, but to help make all of the officials and managers better.

UIC can also send out an email/post a case play and proper ruling. I’ve done my part to help trigger one (I think just one 🤔) of these emails.
