3rd Year Umpire from Alberta

Hello.  I am a third year umpire and a level 2 in Alberta.  Before umpiring I coached for 4 years.  I started umpiring house league or A level 13 and 15U.  Second year I moved up to 18U and at the end of the season worked Provincials as a base ump for 15U AA.  Two weekends ago I worked a 13U AA weekend and this past weekend I umpired three 15U AA exhibition games.  I thought I almost had it figured out and then got some tough love from a crusty 30 year veteran ump.  It was a wake up call and started searching for advice and found this site.  Nice to be here.

Welcome! Nice to have another umpire here that appreciates a nice fleece lined jacket for those early season games (when they don't get canceled due to snow).

I found this site much in the same way you did:  scouring the interwebz trying to get better. I've read it practically every day since and have learned a ton, and met some fantastic people.

Last week I had to go to my car and put on a sweater mid game!  It has been a cool spring.  Two years ago It did snow during a game and I was freezing on the bases.  I had to stand behind a dugout out of the wind.  I go to games thinking I am going to sweat and end up cold.  Bizarre May weather in Alberta .  Yesterday I put together an all weather clothing kit for these situations.

It has been cooler than usual for sure. I'm supposed to be BU today--high of 57 and its been raining all morning.

Just remember if you come down to the States, bring me a bag of Old Dutch All Dressed--best chips in the world and we don't get them.😪

Another Albertan...welcome aboard.

Great site for info and opinions.

The wind has been the biggest weather factor this spring....cold, cold, winds.

Was so happy when I worked up a sweat this past weekend.

Hey 834k3r...will trade you the Old Dutch chips for some Payday bars...can't seem to find them here!

Oooo...that's a solid trade. Throw in some Lime Crush soda and deal's done. 😎

Lime Crush Soda??...now that sounds weird!

Wait. You mean to tell me it's not available any more? 😪

The last time I was in AB (dating back at least 20 years), it was plentiful.

I have not encountered Lime Crush, but now I am highly intrigued . . .

Oh, my. It is/was the best. If you've ever had Green River soda, it was precisely the same. If you haven't had Green River soda, it's similar to (but better than) a lime Otter Pop, but carbonated.

I'm kinda thinking you made those names up.

Am I alone in reading this, and start thinking who in our U-E membership is that “crusty 30 year veteran”? 🤔

Emphasis added.

And that's exactly the mindset we want to always have

you can broadly spot 3 kinds of people, the ones with super high energy to learn and learn fast; the ones who have answer for everything and think they know it all and the ones who actually know a lot but will always answer conditionally with an “if” and a “maybe”. These are just different stages generally we all go through.
